Different Hub Offset?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i have a problem with the drivers side wheel catching on the arch round corners, (even with two people in the car to even out the weight) i thought it was sitting lower on that side but after some measuring and stuff i have found it to be level (give or take a couple of mm).

i then noticed that the drivers wheel sat out more than the passenegr one? and after some basic measuring (using a level from the arch and measuring out from the hub) i found it to be a good 7mm difference between them. in actual fact with a vertical level on the drivers side the level actually touched the tyre where as it was well away on the passenger side.

im running 1.6 shafts but tbh i have no clue about what hubs im using and assumed that anything other than 1.9 ones were tha same offset?

i could have a base bodel one and a 1.6 gti one but im not sure.

whats the best way to actually measure the hub offset? to see what i have fitted. and what i need to sort this out.

i also have another issue which im not sure is related but one side of my strut top has a bigger gap than the other as below. the left is the drivers:

if i lift the car up and down there is play in it. as in the gap goes away??

if you are running 1.6 shafts you can only use 1.6 or base model hubs. the base model hubs make the wheel sit in the arch more.

there is a difference in hub offset, 1.6 is 10mm taller than the same spline base model, and the larger spline 1.9, so it could be possible you have a taller offset hub on one side, but you'd also have odd brake discs as well.

look at how deep the bell is on the disc, 1.6 is obviously deeper.

could be a bent strut or hub.

looks like your top mount rubber donut need replacing too.

both dohnuts were pratically new as i rebuilt both sides recently with new b4's.the only thing thats old is the springs. i'll have to take them off again to check to see if they are assembled correctly.

i have 307 hdi disks and callipers fitted the same both sides but surely they will fit to both 1.6gti and base model hubs?

so im thinking then i have retained one of the original 1.6 gti hubs and a base model one on the other side.

i will need another base model hub then to bring the wheel in a little to stop it rubbbing.

Mei, when you say taller do you actually mean taller? or further out from the car?

i'll take the wheels off and measure the offset, but where can i measure from? inner arch or upright?

if you have 307 discs then both will be base model or 1.9 hubs so it doesn't seem to be a part compatibility issue, they wont fit the 1.6 hub.

taller as in further out from the side of the car.

ah right, well they cant be 1.9 hubs as i know for sure they are 1.6 driveshafts so they must both be base models ones.

well thats leaves odd wishbones which i think is unlikely as i know they are 205 ones cos i removed them from a 205.

its a pattern wing so it must be that. balls

might have to go for slightly smaller profile tyre or one that has more of a curve to it and hope for the best. as i have trimmed the arch back as far as possible.

im going to do some more measuring from a point that is more reliable than the arch/wing and see whats amiss

i'll be back

removing the wishbones from a 205 does not mean they are 205 wishbones

if they have lattice type ribbing they are 205, if they are plain they are 309.

what wheels and tyres do you have?

Well yeah I guess your right :)

Wheels are 206 nimrods 16" ones

Not sure on tyres but they are not matching can't remember if they are 195 or 205/45's tho

I'm pretty sure they are ribbed wishbones

Guess you'll be on spacers then, how thick are you using?

I found that those wheels would actually fit without any on the front though I never tried them on the 205 so don't know how outer arch clearance is like, was fine on the 309 though.

Got no spacers on the front and they are fine apart from the outer arch on the drivers.

Running spacers on the rear though

Are there not 2 variants of nimrod wheel with different offsets? I believe the 406 had them also.

Theres the ET20 ouragan from the 406, stamped on the inside.

right well i had both the front wheels off today to do some more measuring and it looks like its deffo not the hubs.

even the arches are not that far out (that was measuring from the strut upright).

i have however switched over the front wheels and it looks like there is much better.

you can also see clearly the difference in size in the below picture: the right one is en eagle f1 which was on the drivers side (this pic is with it on the passenger side) and the left one is a contipremium contact2 now on the driver side, you can see there is miles more space on the inside in comparision.

...............erm......yeah well....

It seems I have 2 195/4516 and 2 205/45/16 tyres fitted to the car.

And this f1 is a 205 doh what a twat I really am , always go for the worst case scenario .

I'll chuck this one in the back with the other one and all should be good.

Sorry to waste you're time.

Always check the basics first. Lots of times I have been asked to look at badly handling cars only to discover that tyre pressures are way out, or tracking is a mile out.
