Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi there

When raining / washing my car , water gets in from the rear windows (GTI)

the rubber is dry and the outer seal is getting shortened and .. mess!

I was thinking of fitting a new seal , any replacement i can use?

thanks

When i did mine a good few years ago i got them from main dealer, Expensive but stopped the water coming in.

I was amazed by how much the old ones had shrunk

You could heat them and try stretching them may help a little or do what I did and fit base model rubbers and non opening windows. They dont seem to suffer with shrinkage and mine have not let any water in.

You have them seals fitted upside down (wrong sides), the drain holes should be at the bottom to let the water out, you could end with rotton 1/4 panels if it holds the water.

When i looked for a new set last year my local Peugeot dealer advised they were NFP (No Further Production), and no stock available.

After some small amount of water getting in mine i resorted to the suggestion from an older thread on here to warm the rubbers and stretch them slightly/carefully and so far they've held up ok.

The problem with using seals from other vehicles will be the surround fitting well inside. While the seal may sit on ok with some trimming, whether it sits in well against interior trim is another thing.

My trick was to get a third seal of the same type (shrunk or not) and cut out a section about 2 inches long, depending on how much yours have shrunk, then cut your old seal and glue the new section in. Hey presto a bigger seal!

I used tiger seal to fix the edges together and so far no leaks. It is a bit awquard to get them stuck properly though.

Well i jinxed it - torrential rail we had yesterday seems to have seen a bit of water coming back through the seals again - bugger :( Looks like i'll have to bring the order of a half / top cover for the car for the winter forward i guess :)

Tempted to look into the possibility of going the non opening route as pictured above, but i'd just be annoyed about taking away the originality of the car :(

Im sure spraying a little silicone grease should help keep the old ones in good order.

As getting ready for winter, by the looks of our so called summer, winter will be another dry one with frost and snow like last year.

yeah i saw them... what's the point anyway if within few years it's gonna shrink again?

I believe we need a better solution . by the way , boiled the seals and stretched them , it helped making them longer and fit better

on the window. the problem i have now is figuring out how to stick back the 2 parts together.
