Painting Problem Brake Servo

Recommended Posts

m@ttc

I hope this is in the right section. I've tried painting in my brake servo this week, i stripped it back to bare metal put three coats of grey primer on. I read on wikihow you can then wet and dry with 600 grit and acetone before the top coat. Well i tried this and the acetone took the primer straight off  Anyway it was only a small area so i just rubbed it all down dry, with wet n dry and applied a top coat which seems to have the look of broken egg shell, heres some pics.

question is can i just rub this down and carry on? a mates told me because i haven't used an etching primer, just normal acrilic primer its all gonna come off in six month's anyway. If this is the case ill strip it back to bare metal again and start again now whilst its off the car, only thats gonna be a pain in the a**e :( can anybody help ??

i would strip it back to bare metal again and two coats of etch primer then two coats of normal primer. Then flat it down and clean it off then whatever colour u want to spray it.

This has always puzzled me.

Without ever trying to do it, I wonder why exactly is it so difficult to paint a brake servo?

Loads of people seem to have problems with it.

P.S. I like that bare metal look :D.

My one came in black etch, i just keyed it back and sprayed some VHT paint on top and it came out good. I used VHT due to the 2.0ltr engines manifold being big and hot.

i would use some sort of zinc primer ontop of the etch. Just for added rust protection

The eggshell is a reaction of the top coat with something. Acetone is not a great idea, it is a solvent and will fetch the paint off, its probably what your lass uses on her fingernails after all.

Get hold of some panel wipe from a paint place, that is more suitable. Also be careful of getting a too "shiny" finish on your bare metal, as it is not good for adhesion of the paint. Personally I would use acid etch followed by 2 pack topcoat.

Zinc primer only has the most protection when its in contact with clean keyed steel. As said etch then 2k paint on top, only if you have use of an air fed mask though, for health and safety reasons. You could as i did on a few brackets, is brush it on but they are not the most visable parts.

Etch primer is good enough for it not to rust as its not going to get stone impacts or similar.

Really, i tried to get some from a few places and was told the metallic is 1k only, tried to get gold and again was told it wasnt possible because it has metal inside. Sounds like i was fibbed to sell some 1k.

Also when i bought some modern 2010 VW van natural grey metallic it only came in 1k but black, silver paints i bought was in 2k. Is it a new thing ?

well everybody seems to go for etching the bare steel looking around on the web with car restorations, but looking further into this im told that theres no point etching ferrous metals as there to much iron in them for the etching to penertrate into. And that its only used for none ferrous, ally, copper etc. Any way with this in mind i just sanded back, primed again and repainted top coat in acrillic. Scratched the back with a penny to see if it would flake off but it seems to be stuck on pretty good. Dont have equipment for 2 pack, this is my first time spraying so dont take anything i said here to be right or wrong because i dont know. And im lasy so i did it the easy way  anyway i think it turned out ok
