Great tip, will use it on my 87 cards as they too look a little faded. BTW - a GTI gear knob is supposed to be red not white...

I disagree, it can be red or white. Earlier ones are more often white in my experience and that car is a ph1 - although it must've had a gearbox change because it has a BE3 fitted (or so the shift pattern would lead us to believe.)

Mine is a ph1.5 BE1 box and has a gearknob with white lettering.

Obviously i still want a red one instead though!

I'm not 100% sure when it comes to Phase 1 models, but with the exception I think of Griffe's (and possibly some other speciai editions) the lettering on the GTi gear knob should be red, and 1.6 and 1.9 models have different style inserts on the top.

Base model gear knobs are white, although these are commonly found on GTi's these days as replacements for the original gear knobs that have fallen apart. It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things unless you're really picky or entering concours, but certainly they should be red on GTi's.

Top tip and one I have been doing for the last 3 years or so when I tarted up my phase 1 CTI. It only lasts a few months though before it too fades in the sun.

Well, cheers for re-educating me. I had seen more GTI's with white knobs (oo err) than red so had thought it could be either. Plus, i couldn't think of a base model that would've needed the BE1 shift pattern knob - perhaps an earlyish diesel.

yerp, diseasels would have a BE1 box, 205 was designed for a diesel, GTI came later.

Bazil has the correct red gearknob to use anyhow after I sold him my BE1 'knob with red domed top a few months ago.

I replaced it on my 1.6 CTI with a new correct white lettered one.

Looks quite good actually!

Might be less risk than mixing up a dye and soaking the fabric.

I'll give it a spin myself

Thanks Champ

Maybe, like what wheeler dealers did, using spray paint would last longer and be much quicker to do. Although seems a good tip for the top stripe bit, thanks.

Afternoon,

I believe that Phase 1.5 models had the following gearknob for BE1 boxes, which is probable as this 205 gti is mostly still in the original condition except for the stereo, the indicator lenses and Magnex Exhaust.

That is the correct one for a BE1 1.9 GTI - 1.6 GTIs have a red insert with no domed plastic top, just red indented letters.
