High Ppm Exhaust Reading

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

One of the items i failed my mot on was the exhaust gas PPM reading of 1630.

Looking at my old mots this figure is normally around 370 on my car.

Could it be the tester didnt test it as a non cat vehicle or cold it be that somethng has gone wrong in the car?

That's very high. 1200ppm is the limit for a non-CAT car, but it should be well under that figure - 200 to 400 or so being typical.

High hydrocarbon figure is basically unburnt fuel.

What was the CO figure?

It should hunt quite allot on idle with those figures, Mind having driven a Mi with a recon AFM it's worth doing, Reminds me of when they where new (Almost)

The other figures are:

CO2: 5.66%

CO: 0.07%

O2: 12.05%

Lambda 1.963

HC: 1630

On idle it doesnt search at all. Its idle is a bit over 1000rpm which is higher than the 900rpm it used to be. With the cams it used to sound much lumpier at 900rpm but now its idling at 1000rpm it doesnt have the same rough sound as before :P

Ive dropped it off for the mechanic to sort out before the MOT retest tomorrow (he says he knows you Miles, its Ian who is currently based in Tuckton garage, says he knows you from way back :) )

Rather rich there, co2 should be down at 1-1.5% for best running.

Those figures read almost exactly like my old mi16 did a few years ago - changed the CTS to fix mine and it flew the next emission test. Check for air leaks and such first though.

My old Mi16 did the same - although it was on cams. I did find that as soon as the revs went up to 1100 it dropped to 400ppm.

The emmisons test they do for theseolder engines is to hold the revs at 2000rpm and then drop to idle - they then take the measurement.

My current MOT tester allows idle speed to be up to 1200rpm to get around these issues.

According to him some of the 'rally boys' bring their cars idling at 1800rpm to try and get around this issue!!!

SOrry to bring this up again, Im workin on my usual slower than slow speed.

Am i right in thinking the CTS is going to be blue in colour?

Im not sure where on My Mi16 engine i find this can someone give me a clue?

Does anyone know wheres the best place to get a new one from, and a part number if possible :D

Thanks

(ps i have tried searching and have not done very well in the last hour getting these answers)

CTS (aka ECU temp sensor) is on the passenger side of the thermostat housing, and has a 2 pin blue plug.

It is the only 2 pin plug on the 'stat housing (the other two are single spade connectors) so should be easy enough to find - it should be "blue" (usually a faded bluey-green colour) unless for some reason it's had a late 306/406 sensor fitted, in which case, it'll be green.

GSF do the sensors, as should any decent motorfactor. Don't have a part number to hand though I'm afraid.

Thanks, do the seniors fit a few ranges of engines then?

I was on a site last night that had a blue sensor for the 405 8v engine but the site didn't list a 16v engine or a section for the engine under a Citroen, also it didn't have one listed for a 205 1.9 gti.

Is it possible this sensor will be the right one?

Or heres a blue sensor from car parts for less for a 1.6 205 which looks better and its got the same part number for a 1.9 405:

is this the one i need?

Bosch part number is 0280 130 026, GSF do these.

Same part as the 8 valve engine, same resistance as the later green temp sensor on the 2.0 engines.

I don't think Peugeot/Citroen themselves is much more than CP4L!

I got a generic Fuel Parts branded one from a local motorfactor for about £6 IIRC.
