Fitting A Pedal Box

Hi guys

 

I'm considering fitting a aftermarket pedal box but will gti6 brakes still be ok? Spoketo Atspeed racing in Essex they say I need better front brakes, otherwise the pedal will be really hard to push down? Hope you guys can help me out :)

if you get the pedal leverage ratio and MC sizing right right it'll work well, you don't need to change the calipers.

 

like any non servo assisted setup it will need a harder push on the pedal but personally I got used to one pretty quickly and gave decent confidence as you could modulate very easily, however I don't think I would use one on the road,

As said, std callipers are fine with a pedal box, even base model plan disc callipers would be OK (Extreme example I know) so saying you need bigger one's is rubbish

For a road car, I'd stick with a servo unless you need the room around the engine

I don't have a servo on my rally car and after driving normal cars it does tend to seem a bit strange but i have bias braking. On a road car stick to the servo!

2 of my 205's have bias pedalboxes in. Personally I like them but often people driving them for the first time are alarmed by how hard you need to push. I like it as the harder you push the harder you stop. It also as miles says makes for plenty of room around the engine.

That looks a bit cack if I'm honest. Why are you considering a pedal box? Barely any people run a floor mounted pedal box as frankly it isn't worth it in 99% of cars. Have a look through the projects and note how many people use floor mounted pedals as opposed to modifying the std brake pedal mount to take 2 mc's and a bias bar.

Speak to people who run them on there race or rally car.

 

That way it gives you a fighting chance of not buying useless crap....

I'm with Tom - run pedal boxes in the rally car and a Lotus 7 replica thing, and I prefer the feel (most modern cars are just way to over-servo'd these days). You get feel and progression with a pedal box, but you do have to stand on them compared to a servo setup.

 

Not sure what your reasons are for a road car - can only think engine clearance would be a valid reason - otherwise I'd stick with the servo setup if you can.

It doesn't seem possible to mount a floor-mounted pedal box in a 205.

 

Or at least the Compbrake brake pedal I have would require serious bulkhead/floor modification in order to fit.

I have found that fitting AP racing master cylinders make a marked difference to the brakes over say Girling cylinders. Additionally AP make short cylinders which helps with clearence issues when a 16 valve engine is fitted.

yes, AP master cylinders do give better clearance. and the smallest and second to smallest valve size cylinders give a lighter pedal feel (less effort).

This one is made to fit apparently, and it looks like it's angled to go up the curve of the bulkhead.

Itll fit fine, but the seat will need to move back and extend the column a bit.

 

Oh and the gearstick!

That's not what I'd class as "fine".

 

If you want it to fit fine and retain the pedal positioning, bulkhead needs to be cut out and a box section put in.

Nope! And if your car is hardcore enough to warrant a pedal box then it's something you should consider.

 

Although saying that, you'll need to be careful around the subframe mount.

Not to restart an old thread but how hard is it to make your own from the original pedal box?, I was looking at alexcrosse thread but the pics wont load on my computer of his own build (boooooo).

Tempted to make some as we've got a few cylinders kicking around from hydraulic clutch conversion on escort cozzehs.

 

on a side note i've been trying to delete a comma from my reply which turned out to be, in a red dwarf style.... my sneeze :lol:
