205Gti Getting More And More Rare?

Recommended Posts

scottbarton

Just had a peruse on Autotrader and there are only 4 205GTi's for sale nationally! Also looked on Piston Heads and again, only a handful of good clean examples. I remember when i bought mine nearly two years ago, I did have quite a choice, but was still a bit of hunt tracking down the one i finally went for...all the way up in Edinburgh!

Is it me, or is the 205 getting more and more rarer? I see from some of the prices of the ones under 100k miles prices are being driven up and up, and even the ones with over 100k prices are held between 2.5k and 3.5k

Must be good news for the owners here being in possesion of an appreciating classic!

I agree. It's not like 8-10 years ago when they were cars you could buy for <£500, drive into the ground for 6 months, and then just buy another. They're ~25 years old cars now, and the people who own them have probably had to look after them.

It's not surprising though as if you check the decreasing numbers of licensed 205 GTIs in uk over the past decade you will find out that over 90% of that in 2001 is not licensed any more and hence possibly lye forgotten somewhere, were broken for part or worse yet simply went through schredder.

Just checked www.howmanyleft.co.uk which gets its data from the Department of Transport.

In 2001 there were 24,116 Peugeot 205 GTi's registered in the UK and in use. 10 years later, 2011 this number had reduced to 2545!!!

Current number to date is 2098.

In the 11 years from '01 to '12 that is an approximate 90% drop in numbers!

The numbers are broken down to:

949 registered 1.6GTi's

1158 registered 1.9GTi's

Can you tell i am bored at work??? ha ha!

Just by going over this forum, you'll be able to add plenty to that figure with the SORN'd 205s (projects/trackcars etc). Maybe it would be an idea to have all members register the number of 205s they own and the status (on-road/SORN)?

Out of interest, how does the DVLA cater for those 205s with engine conversions? Surely, they would no longer fall under either of the 1.6 nor 1.9 GTi categories.

I'd say a good 25% of those numbers were undeclared engine conversions!

They don't care about engine swaps. As far as they're concerned a 205 GTI is a 205 GTI no matter what engine it has.

They don't even consider the 1.6 and 1.9 to be separate models.

Yep hanging onto mine. If it goes then no chance of finding a good cheap one again I reckon.

Actually gave it a proper wash today and cleaned inside and cleaned and fed the leather. No danger of OCD on it just yet though :)

there will be a good amount of sorn ones.mine been one

it would be nice to know how many 100% standard ones there are left

people keep giving up on them and breaking them though

if i could afford to id set a company up buying ones that people want to break and repairing them and getting them back on the road.could even take modified ones, strip modified bits and sell them/px them against standard parts

My 205 has been on the road for a whole two weeks in the last 7 years, that's disgraceful I admit! Although I did have another one aswell for the first two of that. My 309 has been off the road since 2002, although I have owned it for only two and a half years of that. I keep saying one day. The 205 will never be a shinig example, however I would dealy love to have my 309 completely restored but I know this will cost serious money. Unfortunately whilst I hae children and a house to pay for the cars are always at the bottom of the list.

My life will all ways have a 205 Gti in it and what I all ways tell people is if times where hard, I would sell my BMW, Topaz 205 and my Red 205 and I would keep my Silver 205 and my Ford Transit Recovery truck, The 205 has sentimental value and I can go to work with the Transit again.

I rarely see others but I saw one when driving to work in Cardiff Friday morning and another locally in the evening, and I think spotted the same one again driving through the village this afternoon, so they are out there, somewhere!

In the 18 months or so of ownership, apart from james_pug (who helped rebuild my beam), I have not seen another 205 Gti on the road. I even drove 1000 miles round trip to Germany in August and did not see one.

Have had plenty of comments from admirers in garages and car parks etc, with typical "don't see many of them around any more" remarks though.

When you see one, do you acknowledge? When I had my MR2 it was customary to put your hand up, or flip the pop up headlights to say hi! Did get some strange looks from people not in the club scene though!

I use to get it in my XS back in 2002, it was white with a bit of rusty brown lol and got gave a wave from the same person a few times going to my mams house. When doing the run at the depot going round the country , i wave but usually get no response or get the stares. Although i'm in the van during those times.

They are getting quite rare, it was a while since I'd owned one before the car I have now and the amount of people that comment saying "havn't seen one of those for ages" etc is quite funny compared to hardly ever getting that with ones owned in the past.

There are a good few between Pontypool and Newport though Mei so surprised you don't see more, I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head and I'm sure there are more I don't know about.

I think there are more out there squirrelled away than folk realise. For example the laser green which is now mine lived less than 1 mile from my house for 9 years, but I'd never ever seen it out on the roads as the old gent that owned it only used it occasionally.

I don't often venture up that valley  my usual commute is down to Jct 28 then across to Cardiff, you don't get many commuting in 205's these days so not surprised I don't see them!

Mine's been SORN and in the garage for a good 5 years, 127K miles was thinking about sorting it out and maybe selling to clear a credit card, worried I'll regret it so might hold onto it :)
