205 1.9L Gti To Stock Standard Mi16

Hi All from Downunder!

I am a young dude from WA who is currently building a 205 Mi16 for a first car. Here's the story to start off my build thread:

I picked up a 205 1.9 GTi recently with a crack in the block. I was going to to just patch the block up and replace the head gasket as a temporary-ish sort of thing until I was ready to do an eventual mi16 conversion. But then, after taking the head off, I discovered that it had cracks under two of the valve seats rendering the head useless. So instead of looking around for a new head to put on a crap block I decided to bite the bullet and mi16 it straight away.

After a bit of a hunt I got offered a bare 405 mi16 motor that had been stripped of nearly everything. Since they are quite hard to come across in WA (and it was cheap enough) I decided to grab it as a start. The previous owner reckoned it was a good motor.

Then, after a bit more of a hunt, I came across a BX 16V that had been used as a donor car for it's block - it's bare block! Perfect! So I brought it home and now have pretty much nearly all the parts I need to get the other one running.

So the basic build idea is this:

To use the 405 motor.

Replace all the essential motor bits (timing belt, water pump, auxilary belt, etc.).

Advance the no 3 inlet pulley with an offset key to increase mid range torque.

To do the loom properly, pull it out of the 205 and convert it on the bench.

To use a 4.43 FD with the 1.9 ratios (except for 5th).

And that's about it!

I know that I really should be doing the main bearings and big ends, but as first car funding is terrible I can't really do it ATM. :(

What I am currently doing is rebuilding the gearbox. I have pulled the Mi16 one apart sucessfully, with the help of the rallyparts guide, and now I am going to tackle the 1.9 one.

Please bear with me, as this is the largest mechanical project I have ever started. However, I do feel that it is within my reach. :)

Here are a few pictures.

It looks a bit purple in one of the pics! I assume its actually black is it?

good luck with the work, and welcome to the forum :)

the forums a bit dead at this time of night (except for me, being nocturnal night shift worker!)

was the car originally sold in oz or has it been imported at some point?

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the welcome.

And, no, it really is purple. :)

It has an Australian compliance plate, 9/88. So it isn't an import.
