Mi16 New Loom

Recommended Posts

CMR2010

Alright guys, just registerd with this forum as im in the middle of building a new hill sprint car, and i have built a mi16 engine on twin 45 carbs.I have reached the point of needing to wire it and after many long nights trawling throught the internet im still not to sure on what i want. Basically what i would like to do is just wire the engine from fresh has anyone ever done this or have any info on it? i come from a rally background of mk2 escorts when no ecus are needed, is this the case on the mi16 can it be done with no ecu, just with a basic ignition system? any info would be very much appreciated,

Thanks, CM

How are you running the ignition side of things?

If you're using an 8v distributor then it's very straight forward from an engine wiring point of view and there's no ECU or anything else required.

Thanks for the reply! Using the distributor of the 1.6 gti along with the ignition amplifier just not to sure how to incorporate it all

Cheers

Effectively, you just duplicate the ignition wiring side of things from the original 8v loom. The vast majority of the wiring on the standard loom is related to the fuel injection side of things.

I don't have a wiring diagram to hand, but it's very simple and there's only really three wires/connections needed to make it work - 12v ignition, earth, and the tacho feed. The rest is self contained, with the timing signal from the dizzy triggering the ignition amp, which in turn fires the coil.

You'll also need the wiring for the starter, alternator, and the various switches/senders for the instrument cluster - assuming you've not replaced that with aftermarket gauges/senders. All very simple and straight forward.

You'll also need to do something with regards powering the fuel pump, as that's on the original engine loom as well. You could either quite simply adapt the wiring for the original 8v tachymetric relay, or you could have a regular ignition switched relay, although that's not ideal from a safety point of view as the pump will continue to run in the event of an accident if you can't switch of the ignition.

Once again thanks for the replay in all good with wiring starter, alternator ect and most auxilliarys are on a custom fuses toggle switch board I have already made, my problem is with the ignition side although I understand your last replay do you have or know where I would pick up a wiring diagram as of how to wire the ignition with the amplifier wire for wire?

Also the fuel pump is already wired separate due to having to have replaced it for one to supply the carbs.

Any help would be great thanks
