25.4 MM PER INCH.are these just standard tyres from europe mate ? the only metric tyres i ever came across were used on the old metro/montego and were no good for anything except them as they had a totally odd ball bead that required different rims.

????

It looks as though its a slick tyre to me, they just use different methods to measure them

so 200/59/15 will be,

200mm wide

590 overall diameter

15 inch rim

As a rule they dont use aspect ratio's eg 55% in the case of 185/55/15

IMHO they will be a bit wide for a 205 without work.

I used 185/585/15

as stu said they are not metric, just competition tyres.

they may fit (the car that is, they'll fit the rim fine)

depends which manufacturer they are as they do vary, some have pretty beefy sidewalls, and IIRC they measure the overall width not just the tread contact patch, check the manufacturers website though, as most do give specific tyre dimensions as well as the quoted sizing.

Proper "metric" tyres are Michelin TRX.

Popular on the Citroen CX, BMW 5 Series, Renault Alpine A310 and not many other early 80's saloons......oh and the 205T16!

yep thats the ones i am on about, they have like a double sealing bead that can only be used on specific rims,i worked as a tyre fitter in the mid 80's and they were about 125 quid a corner then on a montego/metro the first ones were fitted with metrics, used to have to sit the old grannies down to tell them the price before they got new tyres on their shopping cars :o 5 weeks pension in them days for a pair of tyres, michelins money making scheme didnt last long as most just changed wheels as you could almost get a full set of tyres in those days for the price of one michelin

God knows why I thought it was imperial......... Early sunday morning idiot syndrome I'll put that down to I reckon.

O.k thats where (some) of my confusion is then as they are advertised 20/59 as opposed to 200/59  as well as thinking they were imperial

Yes they are competion tyres, Wets to be more presice, of the michelin variety.

I'd hazzard a guess that they most certainly won't fit my car without mods which I won't be doing so I'll have a look out for some 185/585/15's.

Moochas gracias for your help guys.

My E34 535i Sport had those on the spare set of original wheels it had. Always struck me as odd being a late '89.
