Advice Needed On Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Karl

hi there people

as some of you know ive had problems with gearboxes blowing up to in a month lol so was just wondering if it would be be worth converting from a be1 to a be3 i know ill need a new release bearing clutch cable and a pedal.

will the cost be worth it??

will the be3 be more reliable??

is the be3 better and in what ways??

im still looking for a gearbox so if anyone selling 1 im intrested i need it asap and it needs to be delivered unless your in grimsby or very near to.

btw im after a 1.6 coz i love the crazy acceleration :D

many thanks in advance guys :)

I dont think its worth the fiddling at all, there's hardly much difference in the box itself at all, granted a good be3 clutch feels good, but so does a be1 if its all ok!

Just get whats easily available.

Any S/H BE box will be just that, the only way they tend to fail is with abuse of standing starts etc, the only way to make the Diff reliable is to fit a LSD

What!? Standard, open diffs are unreliable and the answer is to fit an LSD!?

I thought everyone knew that, it's really the main weak point of the BE box no matter what age,

You might want to get yourself a BE3 box from a Peugeot 405 1.9TD or 406 1.9 TD. (possibly more cars got them but I don't know which).

These has extra webbing and have therefore stiffer casings. That in combination with a LSD might be an improvement.

If it still keeps blowing, then consider going the ME5/ML5 route to get a more beefy starting point.

i havnt got the money for a LSD or a recon box :( so gonna gamble again on a s/h one  yes i know but i need my car fixing and ive been laid off from work (im a plasterer) due to the building trade going down hill any how i want a be1 box to save faffing about with a be3 conversion was thinking about a mi16 box but am unsure on what the diffrence compared to a 1.6 with regards to ratios ive looked but dont understand what the numbers mean so in simple terms will it go faster with an mi16 top end or accelerate quicker?? thanks
