Scammer On My Autotrader Advert

Recommended Posts

Simes

So,

I'm trying to sell our 206cc as we now have an E91.

My email address is published on autotrader and last night I was contacted by a potential buyer.

Well I had my suspicions but I thought I could have a bit of fun with him.

Here is my conversation with him

Hello,

Aside from what i've highlighted in the advert it has a few small parking dings however the bodywork is in good condition. Mechanically it is also in fine fettle.

The photos on the advert show the car well, could you be a little more specific with your requests before I send a plethora of photos.

Frank,

Are you sure you don't want to come and have a look at the car? Personally I would feel reassured if you did.

That way if you have any problems with the car ie. panel rust, faulty brakes or seized engine etc... anything that I might fob you off with to make a quick sale?

If not I will be happy to give you my bank details.

Kind regards,

Simon

Hi,

My car is missing the flux capacitor, do you still wish to purchase the car? Therefore do you still want my banking details so your shipping company and proceed.

Best wishes

Simon

Frank,

Just to confirm that you still want my car? Before I give you my bank details please confirm that you want a car that has previously been driven by a horse.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Simon

I've not heard back from young Frank since my last reply, perhaps the internet has gone down on his ship? Maybe he doesn't want a car that was last drving by a horse??

Oh well it was fun whilst it lasted!

Are you sure that's a scam? He seems so keen and honest! Personally I'd give him your details for a quick sale ;)

how does that scam work then? I assume they pay into your account, somebody else fetches the car, then they do a chargeback and say they never got the car?

Open up a fake account and take the money and run without supplying the car

Usually they pay you with an account they unlawfully have access to. Then the funds are claimed back by the bank.

I have sold 3 cars in australia exactly by these methods, Over her it is pretty normal to put the money into some ones account wait for money to clear then ship the car.

My last car I did it with was my 205 gti for $7500, waited it to clear rung the fella to say it had then shipping company came and picked it up.

The car before that (well a few cars before that) was my hsv clubsport (vauxhall vx8r) I sold that for $25000 money went in my bank monday and the company came for it the following monday :)

I have had approximately 10 of these when selling my last 2 cars. They usually want to pay VIA paypal. Knowing how bad paypal is (they would refund the lot at a drop of a hat) I always decline. It is so annoying!

I also have seen these kind of scams while trying to sell cars. Tell them a cash sell is the only option and you will not see them again.

I do this, but I also have fun getting them to agree to the most ridiculous things too.

Somewhere on the net there is the story of a guy who played with a similar scanner, had him producing wooden carvings and all sorts, dragged it out for months!

Google "419 Eater" - there's loads of amusing stories of scammers being given the run around and made a mockery of

Yours did make me smile though Simes :D I wonder how many people fall for it though, as worryingly it must be enough to make it worthwhile in the first place?

Just had a similar inquiry while selling my Alfa.

Loved the condition (only 3 pictures uploaded) and price and wanted to pay via paypal and have a shipping company collect it.

I dont know what all the fuss is about, ECP will be able to supply the flux cheap in their pre winter sale, its not like greenland people would want the roof down very often anyway.
