when it starts from cold it does not tick over very well and can die usually and i have to keep restarting

but when it eventually gets warm it ticksover perfectly and never ever dies and does not hunt and drives perfect, so i have to sit for 5 mins when cold just so it don't keep stalling

Any ideas?

Probably the single most common issue on 205 GTi's.

If you do a search you'll find that it will have been covered probably hundreds of times and in lots of detail.

It's usually a combination of poor setup together with worn or out of tolerance parts.

tired afm, air leaks, vac advance not working, poorly setup throttle body and throttle switch, throttle switch not working.

quite a bit really, so grab a haynes workshop manual and have a read, then crack out a multimeter and a few screwdrivers.

i can't get my head round that when its warm it ticks over at 900 rpm bang on and never drops below that or go higher, its more of an annoyance really

its because its warm. up to temp. fueling will be spot on then. (or atleast a lot better off throttle)

as mentioned, have a read through your search results.

Carb clean the airflow, clean the mixture screw too, and adjust both the big and little screw until you get a decent idle, wait till it gets warm and it might adjust the rev's itself meaning it could have a higher idle speed (once warm), if you keep playing with it you should get there in the end.

The big screw is the idle screw and the little one adjust the thottle position (basicly just pulls the cable)

My idle was pretty crappy when i got my car i followed those steps and eventually got a decent idle 1k when cold 1k when warm with afew surges on cold damp days, and 4 miles more per gallon!
