Problems After Replacing Starter

Recommended Posts

gavbrum

After replacing my starter motor I've managed to get it to fire and start (just), but it just farts a bit and I have to keep revving it to keep it going. If it drops below 1000 rpm it just splutters and cuts out. I've retraced my steps from fitting the new starter and found these wires loose but due to the number wires that are not connected on the gti ive no idea if they are meant to connected at all.

Any ideas if this might be the culprit?

Cheers,

Gav

Anyone know if it needs connecting? This is a brand new fault since I changed the starter so I'm thinking they must go to a sensor or something.

Cheers,

I would say you have a air leak did you remove the inlet manifold? check the hoses under the manifold. to prove if it is a air leak is start the engine and spray carb/ brake cleaner down the air filter if the revs will increase/ race at idle

Didn't remove the manifold. Certain I've connected all the hoses up correctly. That was my first guess, but after checking it again it all looks fine.

At a glance, the two wires look like the two for the coolant temp gauge and warning light, but they shouldn't be down near the throttle body unless you've pulled them through from the back of the thermostat housing. See if there's anything plugged onto the two sensors with single spade terminals on the back of the stat housing - if not, chances are that they are for that.

If you removed the oil filler tower, you did remember to put the bolt back in that secures it to the inlet manifold, didn't you? If not, that creates an air leak...

Cheers Anthony. :D

That was it!!!!! I had left one of the bolts off as the oil filler mounting holes was cracked and I was going to replace it. I left the bolt off thinking it would be easier to replace when I got a new one and not realising it would create an air leak in the manifold. Completely forgot I did that until you mentioned it. What a rookie I am. You sir, are a legend.

My car is now fully operational. Been for a wee test drive and it seems fine. I will give it a longer run tomorrow to make sure.

Thanks a lot for your help. :D
