Been in contact with the local MP to spread awareness, not that it's likely to make any difference mind.

After a quick read it appears to be at early stages and if it is going through as a directive then it needs to be implemented by each member state by a certain date. I think the actual impact on the market would be minimal so maybe just watch its development

As much as I'd like to share the optimistic opinion of some of you, I still think it is very much worth registering wide spread objection to this ASAP. The way I look at it is that most politicians don't know/don't give a s*it about the world of modified cars and if anything, they'll see them as a nuisance (boy racers), so anything like this waved under their noses could very easily be signed off in a heartbeat.

We need to make our voices heard so that at least we've highlighted the point and had the opportunity to voice opinion and educate to some degree. I certainly think with the amount of car clubs/forums and the businesses supporting the culture, that there will be no shortage of people objecting to this.

In summary, all I'm saying is please don't sit back and do nothing because you think it'll never happen.

I've read about this just now on PH - first I'd heard of it (away on holiday, so not really getting much internet time); it's an absolute piss-boiler.

I think one important aspect to remember is that a whole chunk of our MPs and members of the House of Lords are likely to be classic car enthusiasts; this legislation will have a major impact on those who have modernised classics as well as the 'car modder' brigade. I'm hoping this will mean our government will show a bit of spine for once, but I wouldn't bet on it.

A family friend is a very serious car collector with over 70 Astons/Jensens/Rolls/Bentleys, a number of which have been 'updated' to improve reliability and performance for European touring and would very probably fall foul of these proposed changes in legislation. He's worth a good couple of hundred and I believe he is very well connected both in terms of the classic car associations and has pals in the House of Lords; I'll be giving him a call when I get back to the UK for sure and see if he's stirring things up.

It seems insane that a bunch of laws being pushed through on the basis of safety and emissions control would out-law a 205 GTI fitted with an Mi16 on ITBs and improved brakes/suspension.

The historic car movement alone in the UK generates circa £4bn annually. The modified vehicle scene is something I'm working on at the moment but I suspect it's not far off this.

I'd suggest Greg Knight MP would be worth writing to and also the FBHVC as they lobby both the UK and EU parliaments regularly over any issues surrounding the continued safe enjoyment of classic and specialist vehicles.

It can't happen overnight regardless.

So... Piece of s**t indentikit euro boxes all round then.

I assume its all about fuel efficiency and emissions and if thats the case europe has been bending over backwards for decades compared to emerging markets and america. Were happy with 2.0 litre lumps whilst yanks insist on stupid massive things. And we pay more for fuel.

Something is seriously wrong in this part of the world.

you're not wrong there, new focus does indeed have a 1.0 turbo motor, the ST is now only a 2.0 due to Ford having sold Volvo and losing out on the 5 pot motors.

It's all about the 1.4 and 1.6 turbos these days.

Picked up a copy of EVO yesterday for some airport boredom reading, and there's a 1.2 turbo Octavia (yes, 1.2 litres in a car that size!) in it, which is something like 10 seconds 0-60 which is adequate for a car of it's type. But also there's a Jag hybrid supercar in development with a 1.6 litre supercharged and tubo charged petrol engine, which they are planning to rev to 10k and produce "in excess of 500bhp", combined with a couple of electric motors.

If it works out like over here in Portugal, every single part of your car that is not OEM , can be used to take you cars papers, issue you a ticket and a forced IPO (MOT in Portugal).

And it's no rare over here that the police issues tickets over crappy stuff.

I just bought a set of 13" steelies because my XS had 14" and the police stops are constant nowadays, i mean , you can't drive around lisbon withouth seeing one, it's ridiculous ( all in the effort to pay the IMF loan *giggles*).

European Union sucks.period.

Yes they gave us money to build stuff, but they also took away every industry we had that could possibily make us competitive in the European market, so bigger countries could have a market to sell their stuff to.

It's getting harder to get fruit that's not from spain over here for instance, it's ridiculous.

And we had enough agriculture to support most of the countries needs, the same with phishing, wich has also been strongly regulated by the EU.

One of the stupid , EU inspired laws , we have right now , is that cars that are prior from 1996 can't circulate in most zones inside Lisbon.

This is complety stupid for several reasons.

For instance, does my XS polute more than a BMW M5? not.But the M5 can go anywhere in Lisbon, and my XS can't!

And I would understand such laws if we had salaries to buy newer cars, but the reality is we don't , and the IMF still says we have to lower our wages?

Lol, i'll leave my rant at that, i could be here for hours ahahah.

I hope this doesn't go in effect in britain, you guys are a major part of what goes down in the world of cars and it would be sad to see that the system has gotten to a point that it takes everything we care about away from us.

Good luck chaps!

To police and enforce this they'd need more police on the roads which due to cuts in funding we haven't got. Additionally you'd need some pretty in depth training to enable them to spot anything non-original beyond obvious cosmetics and then trace history when you get "I bought it like that" from the owner.

In reality any talk of "banning" modified vehicles is a long way from working and the ramifications for thousands employed in the industry not pleasant. The backlash of government turning over an industry which is currently in good shape in the middle of a recession would be a disaster for anyone trying to implement it; the classic industry is already taking notice of this coupled with the relaxation of MOT rules for much older cars etc.

It's a worry but not an immediate "must sell the 205" one honestly.
