Be1 & 3 Linkage Control-2 Types?

Recommended Posts

JeffR

I went and picked up a new linkage control for the Mi16 this morning. Forgetting to take the part number with me, they've given me one with a slightly larger ball-part no. 2449 73 telling me that mine was worn down. I checked it against another one I had which was the same diameter but the flat spots from wear makes it unusable.

On checking with ServiceBox the new one is listed for a Be1 box. For a Be3 it's part no. 2449 74. Was there a change in the mechanism between the 2 box types? My original one fitted into the housing (the one with the washers welded inside), but is quite loose whereas the new one would be a better fit. Don't want to try yet, just in case I need to return it.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Thanks

I recently had to change mine due to the pivot bolt siezing and snapping (had to take steering rack out to remove the broken bolt)

The old control had approx 1 inch after the small ball at the end of the arm like your old one, where as the new one I got from ebay (part number 2449 74) hadn't. Don't know why this is the case. My car is a 1992 Phase 1 Mi16

I compared the 2 and they were very similar (bends in the arms etc)

Compare them closely and if they look the same and the small ball is the same, I say try it and see. If it doesn't fit, just return it and say they supplied you with the wrong part and you unwittingly tried to fit it.

The confusion came about because I thought all linkage controls had those washers welded inside, but after removing one from my spares car, it and the new ball are a proper fit.

The black ball is actually made from 2 parts. A small harder inner ball with a softer rubber outer skin. One the outer wears away and falls off the ball is about 3mm smaller so gearchanges become vague & imprecise.

It seems the washers were welded in as a bodge job to reduce the slack.

Yeah I should've mentioned mine had no washers in the inside. Looks like they were put in to reduce the slack like you said
