I have found some more rust inside the boot, will try just to sandblast it and oil treatment..

Other than that still wondering if I shall make some way of attaching a spare wheel under the car or not.

Just got hold of gasket sets, bolts and bearings for the engine.

 

Will need to get another proper headgasket though :)

Just finished painting under the boot and fuel tank area.

Prepped the ffront calipers a bit.

 

Ideally should have blasted them both, but it took a bit of time so didn't bother on the second one, just sanded.

Gave them both a layer of 2k Epoxy primer today.

 

Wonder if I shall have some nerdy text on them or just let them be plain.

Was thinking of "XU12J4TE STOPPERS", but guess it's not worth the hassle :)

Welded up the area around fuel tank where the small brackets was not 100% good.

Notice it's rusty also under the good looking seam sealer inside the car, not good.

Now I have got my ass around and primed one set of T16 wheels with 2pac epoxy surfacer.

Also painted the calipers in black metallic, didn't bother to make any writings on them.. :)

I also bought some Audi/VW calipers on eBay, it said it was for 405 4x4 also.

Picture of them and a regular FWD 405 rear caliper.

 

Can anyone confirm if I have got the correct rear calipers?

Finally completely painted the underbody.

Will probably do some seam-sealing and put on some thick anti rust protection at some spots where I have painted on top of bare metal. Then paint again and finish :)

 

Will be nice to turn the car back down on it's normal position again in not too long time!

Since last update I have now turned the car back down on it's feet, or not feet axactly, but at least it's not on the side anymore :)

 

Today I started the work of getting changed the right side strut tower that had rusted through at one point. Luckily the left side tower is not that bad so that will stay.

Finally got it out after some drilling and grinding of spot welds.

It seem to me that it is not ment to be changed though, as I was thinking I could put the "new" one in from underneath, but that is not possible. So I need to insert it from the top... seem like I have to do some more cutting and welding to make that happen.. Silly engineers at peugeot designing it like this.

 

I also did finish painting the SL434 wheels I have been working on lately.

They turned out stunning and no runs :)

IIRC VW calipers will fit ok but the bleed nipple is in the wrong place.

Those SL434's are fantastic looking. One of my favourite wheels ever. What are you putting them onto?

It might prove to be in the correct place really? As the hand-brake lever/mechanism is supposed to point down, then the nipple will be at top I guess.

At least it seem so to me :)

It has been a really time-consuming job. I found out I've spent like 2 years on all the rust removal that was done. (not effective hours of course, but.. :))

 

You get kinda tired of the rust work so good to have some other tasks to do in parallel :)

 

The SL434's was a lot of work to prepare due to lots of dings and bad old paintwork.

So hard to sand them, especially at the end of the spoke towards outer edge :)

 

The wheels might be used on the T16 also, as they do allow for the 305x28mm discs and brembos with a 5-10mm spacer.

But originally they were ment to be used on this car:

That I bought cheap 5 years ago, it had only 93000km's on the counter and is in really good nick chassiwise.

 

Now it looks like this, it was set on hold the day I bought the T16 project, so won't be finished just yet :)

No idea about amperage, but yes I use a Mig welder. Just set it so I see that it will get a drop shape also on the rear of the weld. Then I know it's fully burnt through. But it's a bit hard as it's easy to burn holes if you're not careful enough.

Finally some more progress this evening.

 

Had to do some extra cuts to be able to get the new strut tower in place.

Then put in place and weld it on.

Added a lot of owatrol oil on both top and underneath. Hopefully a few more coats of this, and some paint and seam sealer will keep the rust away for a while.

Have just done some few things since last update.

 

Have cleaned two T16 front ARB's with wirebrush on the angle grinder.

Now they are put in acid bath to remove pitting corrosion.

Also started working on some Challenger 2 wheels I have, might be the ones used on the T16.

 

Just started painting the inside of them, need to take of tires before I do the outside.

Some small progress. Cleaned the bootfloor from glue and asphalt-mat remains.

 

Really crappy job, but good to have it clean now.

 

Hopefully it is possible to buy sound deadening that does not stick so hard to the paint? If I ever am to remove it again... ? :)

I started to look more closely into some rust I had observed from the trunk area, inside of the rear left inner wheel arch.

 

Sadly it seem to be quite bad rusted and the plates are getting thin...

Wondering what to do, if I shall start cutting and welding, or if I just shall try to treat it with some anti corrosion stuff.. not too tempted of more rust welding now, but agian if it's really thin it's not too good just leaving it as is either -_-

Yesterday I found even more rust when I removed some more of the factory seam-sealer inside the left rear wheelarch.

It seem to me there is literally rust all over the car if you start looking under the seam sealer. So a "rust-free" 405 is never really free of rust :)

 

Also cleaned up the area inside trunk etc. and at the left rear in general.

Will apply some oil and paint later when I'm done with the other side too.

Slightly more progress now.

 

Bolted the spare subframe to the car, need to get some front suspension in place to be able to get a rolling shell, but that'll be later after more paint and such in the inner arches.

I did also put the screwdriver through the metal in the rear member on the rear right inner arch.

Also quite some rust starting in the rear right sill, the orginal glue/bodyprotection mass was getting loose, so I decided to remove all of it.

Need to treat it somehow :)

 

Also stripped some wishbones for paint and bushes, will need two of these to put on car to move it to paint-booth later on.

 

Even helped a friend with painting his 405 Mi16 the other day, standard 405 color, but with 30% matt finish added to the clear coat.

 

Actually turned out quite nice.

Bought a rather cheap windscreen removal knife from eBay, not the best quality, but it actually worked quite ok, managed to remove the rear screen without destroying it :)

Also finished up the welding of the rear member.

Not the nicest work I've done,, but it'll last for some time. Drilled two holes in the end and hi-pressured them with penetrating oil :)

Finished up all metal-work in the rear arches and boot today.

 

Found a small hole in metal under the seam sealer in the very corner of the boot floor.

 

Cut out a small piece and welded in new metal. Horrible welding though as I didn't clean the plate good enough before, so lots of sparking.

High spressure sprayed both the boot and inside arches both sides at rear with penetrating Owatrol oil before I left today. I will add one more layer of oil tomorrow, and a third layer towards end of week. Then dry for 1 week and ready to paint afterwards :)

Also testfitted slam panel/fan cowling and front bumper to investigate space for intercooler.

It seem to be too tight for a front mounted IC using the standard fans with radiator in orginal position.
