Mi16 1,9 Misfire Between 3000-4000 Rpm

Recommended Posts

johnny and

Hi

I have somewhat of a strange problem - and I have had it for a year now.

My MI16 has a very heavy misfire between 3000-4000 rpm.

I suspect it to be related to the ignition as the rev counter jumps up and down like crazy when it misfires.

Below 3000 it runs perfectly and above 4000 it also runs perfectly. On a few occasions it has stopped the misfired - but started again

I have put on:

A new ignition module

Another MAF

New spark plugs.

I have ordered a new ignition coil to see if that would do the trick.

Do you have other suggestions

Cheers ;)

do you know anyone who has a 1.9 mi16 you could borrow there ecu to try?

has the timing been altered?

are the plug leads the right way round :D

is the fuel filter in good condition?

are the injectors in good condition?

if it has 2 ignition moduals try swapping them over, sound silly but works

and the number 1 way to stop an mi16 missfiring- use super unleaded fuel!

Dizzy cap and arm change - no succes

Timing belt checked - no succes

Only 1 ignition module.

Is running on super :-)

I will see if I can borrow a ECU from someone:-)

This week I will also change the Ignition Coil and mayby also the Leads.

Thanks so far - I will keep you updated :-)

Something odd with the shielding of the wiring to the TDC sensor?

Maybe some interference of some other signal kicks inn about 3-4000rpms and engine misfires.

Sounds very plausible to me. MI's haven't been new for ages. So a shielding fault or perished wire coatings wouldn't be surprising at all. But bugger me as to what else kicks in in at around 3-4000 rpm.

I'd start giving all connectors a thorough check due to it being a fairly simple job. If that doesn't do it, I'd check the harness starting at the ecu and branching out from there - connector by connector. A tedious job but there is really no way around it.

Enjoy :P

I have now put on yet another new ignition module - and that has helped a lot.

It still isn't a 100% so I think I will check all connetions - as electrical design is NOT a strong feature on french cars :-)

Thanks so far

Mr Teflon

Speaking from experience.

Check the distributor cap, rotor arm and ht leads very carefully. Any cracks/splits or signs of corrosion could be at fault.

Also, get some new thermal paste on the rear of the ignition module.

I also remember the ECU on my old mi16 often had some water trapped inside.

When this happened it would start to behave strange, misfiring and strange behaviour in general.

I just opened it and cleaned the inside, put togeather and it was fine afterwards.

I had a very similar problem, could even be the same, the fault was the ecu... Things that did help were ignition parts rotor, cap, leads and plugs. Didn't change the ignition module as these I've heard will not give any indication of failing they will mostly fail and make the car unable to start.
