Standard Pullies

Hey Guys

Im starting the process of putting my BakerBM verniers on. They have two presets, #2 and #4.

My car has the #4 inlet pulley on it atm. Just wondering if I should look at setting the cam pulley to the #2 setting?

#3 pulley is used on the XU9J4Z inlet cam to advance the cam timing 3 degrees (crank)... Later XU9J4 engines were fitted with #4 pulley on the inlet. This advances the inlet cam by a further 5 degrees to a 106 degree centreline

Quoted from - http://www.taylor-eng.com/xu9j4/16v_overview.html

If I have read this correctly the #4 pulley is 8 degrees (crank) advanced compared to the #2 pulley. This would give less overlap and higher mid-range torque with a decrease in the high end? If I reverted the timing back to the #2 setting, the torque curve would be pushed up the range with losses in the lower/midrange areas?

Would the #2 setting be more suitable for a car that is going to be used for competition, rather than as a daily d?

Sweet. Will set them both to #2 to start with once they are on.

Cam - just don't make your car too peaky, remember the drive i took you on? i need more mid-upper range power to make the car go faster, i would work on getting a lower larger flatter peak power range than have a higher smaller peak power range, unless your on a track you will want more overall area under the curve.

Be cautious! As soon as you move away from standard pullies you should be using a dial indicator to set up the cams.

It's only a 4 degree difference so I can't imagine it would make a huge difference. If it's no good I can just change it back ;)

Hey Peter, These are the pullies.

The timing hole is not present though so I will be using dial gauges for the initial setup, then using the presets to change between factory timings.

They were removed from the ones we got as BakerBM thought we should be using dial gauges rather than relying on that hole. He reckons they are not accurate enough.
