405 Mi16x4 1.9 - High Revs On "cold" Start

A question - whch is a bit embarrassing due to the fact that I'm a Danish Peugeot shop foreman.......

Every morning when I fire the old girl up (or after a days work), the enigne will turn over 4 - 5 times before lighting up. It immedeatly jumps to cirka 2200 rpm - hangs there a bit - then drops down to normal idle speed (which is different depending on it's winter or summer). I've noticed two other things at the same time. The camfollowers rattle a bit at first and the car wreeks of V-Power. No fuel leeks found and there is enough oil. Otherwise she runs like a top!!

I bought the car off of my own tech. advisor - who couldn't figure it out either in the three years he had it.

Due to the price of the car in DK when they were sold new - MI16s are few and far between. And due to getting bent by "boy racers", they've become an even rarer breed!! So our experiance with them in DK is fairly superficial if not to say non-exsistant.

Has anyone ever heard of the "problem"? and if so, a souloution would be nice.

Thanx!

How long do the revs stay up before they drop back? I take it all the service items are in good order like all the filters, spark plugs, leads, distributor cap and arm? You probably need to work through everything methodically until you find something wrong. I had a starting problem for many years and had tried so much to fix it with no success. Then one day I thought I'd pull the fuel rail out and what do you know, a bloody injector was leaking! I changed it and the starting problem was gone. From what you say it's easy to jump to conclusions like saying maybe the coolant temperature sensor for the ecu needs replacing but really these things need testing.

It hangs for about 3-4 sec.

And yes, dizzy, leads, plugs ect. ect. are okay. Our techie rebuilt/overhauled the engine about 2 years ago - a year before I bought it.

Someone on "PSOCC.com" said maybe the idle valve (he called it a "Supplementary Air Device"?) - but then I would assume that the problem would be present in other situations as well and not just at the start.

3-4 seconds isn't too bad actually, not sure what mine does, I'll check in a bit. The Mi16 hasn't got a S.A.D, it just has the idle speed control valve. Probably worth taking it off and giving it a bit of a clean with carb cleaner or something. And try to clean up the connector to it.

Mine goes up too but drops after 1-2 secs.

Mine also smells like fuel sometimes but has never failed W.O.F (NZ M.O.T) on fuel leaks. Another 4bie I looked at also smelt alot like like fuel. I'm just guessing that it's something to do with the fuel tank breather that means you can smell it from within the car.

I'll give them both a looking over.

My old H reg 405 used to smell of fuel quite a lot inside, sure it was the tank breathers but I never got around to checking it. My J reg one was fine though

Breather hoses are near tank fillingpipe. In 4wd models there are four hosejoints at fuel pump and a few more at the tank and fuel filter. If there still exist original hoseclamps, they may be leaking a little and give the smell of the fuel.

My 4bie also revs by itself to 2000rpm, when it starts. At 0C temperature (and warmer) revs drop immediately to normal idle speed. When I started it without preheating at -20C the revs stayed up for a second or two.
