Mi16x4 Drivline Upgrade?

Hello everybody

its my first post at this forum and i hope nobody shots me for silly questions

I got a Mi16x4 with a dfw engine and got myself a crazy idea of getting it up to around 200bhp but ive heard that the driveline is very weak on this car and will need quite an upgrade to handle the power? so my question is what parts need replacement and any recomandation for what parts to use? (maybe blueprints for fabrication?)

it should be able to cope with 200 bhp without problems (if it's in good condition

to start with) as it's torque, not horsepower, that breaks the drivetrain components .

 

that is if you didn't have in mind turbocharging your engine to get 200 bhp in the first place .

how to get the engine to give me 200bhp i havent decided yet, but a turbo isnt out of the question, the engine is going to get a small overhaul during the summer its leaking oil , so i was planning to take some upgrades at the same time

feel free to come with sugestions. cams, pistons, and so on, but i like to have a car that still is possible to use on low revs.

Dare I say it's impossible to get 200hp out of a DFW without a blower? You may find some of the articles on my website useful - http://www.taylor-eng.com. I agree that 200hp isn't going to kill the drive line. If you think about the torque multiplication from the very low 1st and the low diff, you're not going to be anywhere near breaking point. Dumping the clutch in 1st and trying to spin four wheels might get you into trouble however.

 

Back to the 200hp however. It's easily achievable with throttle bodies, decent CR and a new inlet cam. It's harder to achieve with the std. inlet manifold. You just need to spend more on the internals and spin it faster.

and wearing the splines off or just the age and use of the planetary gears.

Sooooo its the splines that wear and thats the biggest reason for failure right? So they need to be uprated to take big power? But what about the internals of the box itself? How much power can that take? Do the uprated T16's brake them?!

Yes, most common failure is rusty splines. And next problem is pins of the planetary gears. Old topic. T16 transferbox is similar and has same problems.

 

Only solution is to make stronger pins for planetary gears and change splineshafts to stronger ones. And sealing transferbox to gearbox around the shafts is best way to avoid rust on splines.
