Brake Bias Valve

Chopped all the hoses and pipes off at the rear. Ready to get new pipes made.

 

The brake bias valve (the load compensating valve over the rear beam) is off and looks in a right cack state. The spring had long since corroded away to nothing, so it's proabably the valve hadn't been operating for some years.

 

I've got 2 hopes of getting a new one, and one of those is 'Bob'.

 

Any issues with just sticking the old one back? I very rarely have more than 2 occupants in the car, or anything in the boot, so the pressure limiting function is one i'm prepared to live without. However, is this likely to cause me any other problems, such as when bleeding etc?

you dont want full power to the rear brakes if there no load, your ABS (if it works..) will be working overtime!

Right. I've cleaned it up, and running an airline through it shows it works, it's just the cacked spring.

 

I'm gonna re use it, cable tie the lever down for the purposes of brake bleeding, then release it for normal use. I've been driving it like that for nearly a year, so that gets me back on the road and gives me time to find/replicate the spring.

 

All things being equal, and the weather being good, I should have her back on the road tomorrow. hurrah!

Could you say how you tested it please as I have a spare compensator in the garage and want to see if its ok :)

Yup - connected up a hose to one of the cicuits, and connected t'other end to my comrpessor. Once the compressor was running I could hear/feel the air blowing through, but once the little piston is pulleded out the flow reduces.

 

Repeat for the other circuit, and Robert is yer mothers brother.

 

By cable tying the lever down i'm keeping both circuits open so I can bleed the system full. Once done i'll release it, and thus duplcate a light load/low brake pressure scenario.

Just ditch the thing, They always rust up not just on 405's, (205's (ABS), 306 and vauxhalls too), The brakes at the back do hardly anything in std form so without it the back brakes do some work which isn;t a bad thing at all

if you remove it miles it locks the back wheels up, and don?t ask me why the abs don?t stop this, it must be just to much pressure for the pump to react in time, I no ive had it do it on mine when mine stuck open once interesting ride :o

The old girl is back on the road, all brakes working. Hurrah.

 

However, while i'm waiting or a new bias valve spring to arrive the circuits to the rea brakes are permanently open. It stops a good 'un, but the pedal has more travel than it used to. I've been practicing my dibble pursuit technique and no misbehaviour, wheel locking etc.

 

It was pressure bled, no problems. Is the extra travel cos of the extra fluid being moved no the rear circuits are properly 'open', or is the servo dying? Went to Kent and back without a murmur, just more throw on the brake pedal than it ever used to have.

 

Otherwise, it's good to be back!

Did you ever get a new spring and if so where from? Or did you bite the bullet and go for a new compensator??
