2.0 Timing Belt On A 1.9?

Recommended Posts

Folks,

the mechanic who's doing the timing belt for me rang me today to tell me that there was a 2.0 timing belt on my car. The 2.0 belt is 134 teeth as opposed to 133 teeth for the 1.9 engine. Now i know for sure that my car is a 1.9 alloy block, and wondered is it possible that the previous owner just put the wrong timing belt on the car and got lucky that it ran? Or could it be possible that it's some obscure, last of the line 1.9 D6C that used 2.0 parts?

I wonder is the 2.0 belt the same length as the 1.9 one (ie is the distance between the teeth the same or different)

The mechanic did notice that the belt was slightly slack before he removed it

We're totally stumped about this tbh

Quite possible that it would run on a longer belt, theres 2 tensioners.

If the last owner just fitted a belt he wouldnt have known that he'd been supplied the wrong belt, though it is common sense to check old against new.

A thought just occurred to me there: Does the 2.0 head fit the 1.9 block?

I haven't tried it myself, but as long as there's enough take up in the idler pulleys there's no problem using the longer belt. The number of teeth doesn't make any difference. All that matters is that the cam pulleys have twice as many teeth as the crank pulley.

I've used one tooth shorter belts on 8V blocks after I've decked them, as there isn't take up in the idler.

Yes, the 2L head fits the 1.9L block. It's almost identical. The longer belt is needed for the taller iron block.
