They don't have shock absorbers! If you depressurize the system you'll be able to safely remove the cylinders. Support the body first.

Like peter said depressurize the system before you do anything, this is done by: remove the passenger side boot trim to expose the wiring and LHM resevoir, disconnect the red 2 pin connector and the brown 1 pin connector (feeds to the pump). bridge out the 2 pin connector located next to the full height switch, after a second the pressure will drop off and you will hear fluid rush back to the resevoir. the battery must be connected on the vehicle if previously disconnected.

You have any problems will be happy to give advise, have just completely rebuilt my rear suspension.

the axle is off the car, but i cant work out how they come out of the axle, do you have to remove the big bolt out the end of the shocks (whats the proper name for them). just i want to refurb them, are there any other citroens that run the same compoments, as i imagine parts are scarce, just i think they might leak as they are pretty oiley.

OK if the vehicle is off the car, slacken the bleed screw on the brake compensator and this will releive the pressure in the system. To take out the rear rams, you have to reove the big banjo union bolt and the banjo. At the other end of the ram there is a clip that passes through the trailing arm into the ram rod, you need to remove this. once those 2 things are don the ram we wobble in the subframe, under the ram there is a wire spring clip, ease this over to one sine and with a gentle tap on the end the ram will pas down towards the trailing arm, give it a quater turn so that the locating lug can pass down the subframe channel, and it is out. once on the bench they are easy to strip and replace the seals. You say they are oily, where abouts as the gaiter is designed to catch a small amount of oil and return it to the resevoir.

Most of the ram components are still availiable through peugeot as are most of the suspension hydraulics, a few resivoir parts are NLA and also the pressure switch etc are NLA.
