What Company Made The Transfer Boxes

Recommended Posts

Did anyone actually succeed in finding a company who can modify the old shafts and make stronger splines for them?

It would seem that new splined sections need to be made then welded on to the old shafts.

And what about cost?

I had mine repaired just over 5 years ago by a local gear specialist. The work was actually arranged by my local Peugeot dealer while the transfer case was apart to cure oil leaks.

The car had done 107,000 miles and the splines were showing quite a bit of wear. They were definitely on the way out but would have lasted quite a few more miles, but too far worn to put back especially considering the work required to take it all apart.

As best I can remember, the splined sections were cut off, new splined sections were maunfacured and welded to the shafts.

Cost was around $NZ800.

Did it work? 28,000 miles and 5 years later and all seems well.

As I understand it the issue is not so much the strenght or length of the splines but the fact that the only lubrication they get is when packed with grease on assembly. The grease turns into an iron oxide grinding past and anytime from around 100,000 miles upwards the splines wear themselves away hey presto - no drive.

I saw a 120,000 mile car with dead splines just last week - parked in a workshop while the owner considered his next move.

I did alot of research into the manufacture of the shafts, the shaft is way to expensive to have manufactured in the uk, you would have to have about 20 made to make them cost effective, even to have the ends made and welded on is expensive about £400 +vat per unit and more for the gearbox output. i had a specialist gear manufacturer look at the splines and the splines supplied by the Finnish guys and they said that the original splines were loads stronger than the Finnish ones and would only consider cutting the original pattern due to warranty and failure rates. this is as far as i got due to a change in my circumstances. I do have a pristine transfer box with like new splines for sale if any one is interested..........
