Air Flow Meter?

Is there any way that a mere novice with engines, like myself, can test to see if an air flow meter is working properly?

 

I was told by a mobile mechanic that mine was playing up, so I went and bought a 'perfect working order' one off of eBay and it has not changed anything! Still runs awful!

It depends on the springs pressure under the black cap on top, they do fall out of 'tune' but they're not really something you can tinker with, well, not without having the car hooked up to a Gas analyser etc to see what you're changing.
