High Temp Light/stop Light

Recommended Posts

I was driving through town today and a couple of times I noticed the high temp light and stop light were both flashing/flickering. The temperature gauge was normal (just below half) so it wasn't overheating and it was driving fine.

When the warning lights were flashing I could hear a relay under the steering wheel clicking like mad so could this be down to a faulty relay? I couldn't see which relay was clicking because it was only doing it while I was driving, and its only done it twice so far. Anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Well. its started doing it loads now and every time the stop light comes on the radiator fans come on too, so am guessing a fault somewhere in the rad fan sender/wiring? I think I'll change the sender and see if that does the trick unless anyone has a better idea on what to do.

On the plus side I went to Oxford for the weekend and apart from this weird fault it was perfect. Kept at 70/80 with a short blast upto 100ish speed units (;)) and all seemed good :D

This sounds like the Bitron controller sensor is going open circuit. It's the brown sensor pointing vertically down under the thermostat housing. Coolant drops onto it, causing it to go open circuit. If this happens, or the connector falls off, the fans will go to maximum speed and the dash lights up. Cool, isn't it!

It's actually very clever, being totally independent of the the guage sensor or the ECU temp. sensor. It's a fail safe system. So if the sensor fails, the fans will come on hard.

Pull the connector off and clean everything up. If I sent you a copy of the Heating & Ventilation manual, all the specs. for checking the sensor are in there.

Thats brilliant, thanks very much Peter :) You did send me a copy of the manual, I'll take a look at it.

Spot advice as usual Peter :) The connector was corroded and looked like it wasn't making a good contact at all. All cleaned up, and has been fine so far.
