405 Torsion Bar Adjustments... How To?

Recommended Posts

KRISKARRERA

Bottom line here is I want to know exactly how to adjust the torsion bars. I need the simplist method possible, not because I'm thick but because I've no experience of rear beams etc. The actual process of getting everything to bits sounds straight forward, assuming no corrosion. The problem is I need to understand the full workings of the darn monstrousity so I can adjust it without bodging up the ride height. I do not like not being able to do things with cars. It was like that with my sump but after the first time I became an expert at removing the aircon and sump.

Listen to good old Haynes, 1990 405 manual, in sexy purple, you've gotta laugh at what they put in their manuals. (I wonder if they do a sex manual... early editions would read: "Place lady on bed, remove labia covers x 2 and locate clit. Any dryness just spray with WD40 and come back later" Later editions would inevitably read, "This proceedure is beyond the abilities of the average man and should be entrusted to your local main sex dealer")

Haynes says...

"405 rear suspension ride height - adjustment.

Adjustment is based on the number of splines at the suspension side member end of the torsion bar being thirty and those at the trailing arm end being thirty-two"

Right yeah I get you... not! How is that relevant? Can some please explain what the hell that means exactly, in laymans terms please.

Haynes says...

"Adjustment is made by rotating the bar while the trailing arm is held in place by the dummy shock absorber"

Ok but how do you rotate the torsion bar exactly?

Haynes says...

"Adjusting one side of the suspension will also alter the height of the opposite side"

Kris says...

Riiiiggght, meaning what exactly? Are they trying to say I can get away with only adjusting one side?

Haynes says...

Ask on the 405 lol

Questions:

1. Haynes says there's 2 torsion bars and the anti roll bar, but when I look under the car all I can see is a rear beam and 2 small bars which I assume are the torsion bars. Where's the anti roll bar then?

2. What's all this crap about dummy shock absorbers? Surely if you alter both sides by same number of splines the car will be level at both sides?

3. Do the trailing arms have to be removed?

4. Does the ARB have to be removed?

5. Is a slide hammer needed?

Well, you got this answered on 205drivers I see.

But I just thought I'd share my adjustment with you.

Get under car

Slacken ride height sensor

Adjust.

Tighten ride height sensor

Go and have a cup of tea.

No idea, I think the fourbie shell is different, but I'm not 100%.

definitely different. Even the rear seat is different so it fits the different contour around the tunnel.

A few questions

Does the sensor work out that you want the car to be lowered or are we just tricking it into thinking it's higher than it is? If you adjust it too much will it constantly bottom out or will it stiffen to compensate? Do you only need to do this if you have lowering springs on the front (lowering the back to even the ride hight or if you have standard hight shocks will the back end constantly be too low?).

Cheers

Cam

Do you still need to know how to lower the rear of your car?

If so is it just normal rear suspension or is the the 4wd set up?

Nah it's ok thanks, I did it a while back and it was alot easier than I expected. Helped alot that the whole rear suspension had been overhauled a few years ago.
