Is There A Need For New Gear Rods

Recommended Posts

Miles

I now make the gear rods as found in most Pug's of the 80's & 90's and the only model I havn;t done yet is the 405, If there's any intrest in these I get some set's made up, Shipping anywhere in the world is not a problem.

I;ve included a picture of what the basic rods look like, but any questions please post away

What's the advantages of these then Miles? Are they an upgrade or is it just a standard replacement because the standard rods on most cars of this age are knackered?

i think they have a retaining clip on them to stop them popping off, i would be interested could you give us a guide price as if they are not to much i will have two sets

If these have the retaining clips then I'm definately interested.

Slightly OT, Miles do you do the quickshift 'L' shaped bracket for a 205 with a MA gearbox?

They have 2 clips on these, One internal and the outer clip and these will never pop off unlike the std ones, They need a grease once a yr to keep them in tip top condition and that's it.

If someone's got a sample set to send to me theey will get a set in return at cost price

I'd only need the samples for a max of a week, I;ve got all the tool's and parts to make them up at anytime

Kris; No idea if you do but the these take out the virbration part of the std linkage and makes for a more positive change, The only thing that may happen is you may get slight virbration thru the gear stick

Got the new rods today, thanks Miles. I've attached a pic of them. I should hopefully be fitting them within a couple of weeks when I put my engine/box back in and will post up how they perform :)

Jer309GTi had the first sample set as he provided me with the old rods to make a pattern from, As these are easier to make and post over the 205/309 ones, If I can get 5 positive orders from this site I will sell them at £40.00 delivered to your door via the post,

If I can get 10 orders the price will be £35.00

Afaik there are two different style rods used on the 405.

Mine has not got the 205 style ones at least.

Will you be making both styles?

Yeah, I'm sure, changed mine for a set of new ones from Peugeot about one year ago.

It's the two small rods that may differ.

Now I;ve seen that I remember now!! But the clip on type like that are quite rare here, The amount of 16v box's I strip I can;t remember the last time I saw that type, but a good point thanks

I have these in stock now for the std ball type,

As always I;ve just got a box in with the clip type fitting, I'll look into getting some rose joint's to fit over these

Miles, have you had experience of the rods transmitting gearbox noise into the cabin?

Since I've fitted the rods I can hear that the gearbox makes a slight whirring noise that sounds like it's coming from the centre console. It's definately the box as the noise goes when you press the clutch. I also fitted a set of group n engine mounts at the same time as the rods. Do you think that as the rods don't have the plastic inserts that they might transmit some gearbox noise? I didn't notice any noises before I fitted them.

I'm not moaning about the rods, I'm very pleased with them (nice positive gear change), just wondering if anyone had reported the same as me? :)

This is only at low engine speeds though, I didn't get the same vibration when I had the mounts fitted on my 309 GTi

You where the first to recieve the rod's along with Paul a few weeks later, I have them fitted to a few 306's and have found all different thing's with different engine mount's, On mine with the Group 'N' lower mount I get slight virbration at 6500rpm (But I get this on tickover too but the engine not the rods), On a Rallye I did with OE mount's you could feel it at around the same RPM but no noise into the cabin,

I'm going to fit a set to a GTi6 I;ve just got with old mount's and see what that's like.

The 106's I;ve done too make no differance at all and they have the same type of OE rod,

Maybe it's the rubber ball that does it, Another thing I;m going to ditch and see what happen's but this will be rose jointed

Yeah, I can quite see how different cars get different results. The noise doesn't bother me in the slightest (it's not exactly loud anyway), I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this at all.

I'd definately recommend these rods to anyone, I remember my first 309 had worn rods, and they would always pop off just at the wrong moment, and I'd be stuck in one gear until I could pull over and put the rod back on. No chance of that happening now :)
