'stop' Light

Recommended Posts

I recently removed the ABS from my car and replaced it with the standard master cylinder and vacuum servo, but now I have the stop light coming on continuously. I have been told that the problem is a feed to the dashboard from the old abs system and that cutting a wire to the dash will stop it. Looking in the Haynes manual I have tried cutting the two wires (69 and 427) that appear to be related to the abs functions but I still have the light on. Is there something that I am missing? I have the master cylinder fluid level connector plugged in and would like to retain its function. I have not removed any of the old electronics from the car just the master cylinder and pump. If anyone can help me out it would be very much appreciated.

I can't recall the STOP light coming on, but the ABS light did. There is a relay high up in the dash, impossible to get to without removing the dash. I resolved the issue by removing the ABS warning light globe.

What does the stop light actually mean, i.e. what causes it to come on? If I knew that maybe I could track down the cause of the light, it might be completely unrelated! Does low brake fluid level cause it to light?

many things will cause the STOP light to come on - oil pressure, temp, brakes etc.

its a bit of a puzzle this one, hopefully when i put the car back together it will have disappeared, if not i'm not sure what to do.

Any luck with this?

Im putting together my Mi16 these days, and the STOP light is continuously lit, along with the handbrake warning lamp actually. I've checked the handbrake switch, and it's not the cause. I bought the car with the ABR partly removed. Only wiring and wheel sensors were left from the original braking system. According to Haynes there seems to be a dedicated warning light relay within the system. I have had no luck finding it.

Success! Removed the "maroon brown" relay (Item number 3 according to the Haynes schematics) located to the right of the steering column. This is obviously a "normally closed" relay, breaking the connection to the warning lamp when the ABR ECU gives a "good to go" signal. Pulling it out also brakes the circuit, et voilá, lights out...

I've yet to test the brake fluid warning light and parking brake light after this though :P
