405 Mi Rear Beams

Recommended Posts

Are 405Mi rear beams the same as other 405 rear beams, such as SRi or GRi, or do they have different torsion bars/arbs? Just wondering cos my 405 has a towbar and looks a little low at the back so I'm fearing the worst

I don't know if the beams are the same but you can adjust the height by rotating the tortion bar spline one notch at a time. From memory the Haynes manual tells you how to do it.

Good Luck.

I know that, unlike comparing a base model 205 to a GTI, the front of a base 405 is same as mi16 in terms of the subframe etc but I don't know if the rear is any different. Obviously it's set to ride slightly lower though.

Do you know if and/or when the rear beam was last overhauled? If not you can bet it's seized.

I'll try to link this to Miles later, he'll know.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't know when/if the beam was overhauled, just got a load of receipts for past services/MOTs. So it's not looking good :(

I can't imagine Pug would have made the rear track wider just for the Mi though, so I'm guessing if there is any difference then it would be the thickness of the ARB and torsion bars, all of which could be swapped from Mi to base model.

Think I'm going to have to get myself down the scrappy to investigate! :)

Cheers

All the 405 rear beams are basicly the same, Just use different T/B's and ARB's, It's much like the 106 beam of all things!

I believe the Partner / Berlingo have exact the same mountingpoints of the subframe as the 405, but maybe a little bit different track width. At least they look more or less 100% identical.. probably they might have some thicker bars too?...seem hard to get good 405 beams these days.

I've been looking into changing the bearing-shafts in the subframe itself, but I'm not sure what material I would need to have the new ones made from, and also if they need to be hardened ++.

Your problem may not be the beam itself but more likely the swinging arm bushes/bearings.

Removing a beam is difficult - not done it myself but have seen the tool needed to do it! Of course Peugeot wont sell you one but the scrappy guy showed me what he made up!!!!

I also heard that the Partner / Berlingo beam was more or less identical to the 405's. The guy I heard it from actually said it was the same as an Mi's.

A mate working at peugeot took measurements of a Partner beam yesterday.

I'll try to find out if it's the same as the 405, as I've got a spare 405 beam in the garage that I'm refurbing. Need to change the axle-pins somehow, get one new made up at least...

I think the difference may be that the partner has different track width?

So do you think its wider? Could it be a good upgrade if it is or would it screw up the handling?

405 rear beams can be a swine to get off if the front bolts round of due to rust as they are bloody hard bolts and a nightmare to drill!!!
