Gti-6 Sump?

Recommended Posts

Guest piran21

Is the 306 GTI-6 sump baffled? You know to prevent oil starvation on hard turns etc. Is it steel or aluminum? Will it bolt directly to the XU9J4 1.9L Mi16 aluminum block? Thanks!

The 309Gti16 has baffled sump.. maybe not the best baffled sump I've seen but better than nothing I would guess.

Yes, aluminium and yes.

All the XU10 A/C sumps are baffled.

Following my leaking sump saga of 2004 if I ever had to take that off again I'd like an XU10 sump. Assuming the mounts for the a/c compressor are in the same place?

The mounts look the same to me.

I've got a 306 a/c compressor mounted on the 405Mi alloy sump, so I don't see why the opposite wouldn't work.

It's a BX engine so afaik the sump is identical to the phase 1.

Actually most Mi's had an ally sump fitted with the lugs for the A/C compressors. Any XU engine with AC had the same sump pan fitted, even though up until that point AC was fairly rare. I've seen XUD7TE (1.8 TD) lumps fitted with this sump if they had AC.

Some Mi's had steel I believe, not seen may around though.

The only Mi16 with steel sump I've seen is those who have changed just so they easier can make their own baffled sump.

Some also claims that the unbaffled steel sump is better than the unbaffled aluminium to withstand oil starvation?

Yeah that could well be the case

The steel sump is far better for oil starvation than the aluminium one. Also easier to fit effective baffles.

Wouldn't fit an XU10 sump to a 1.9Mi as it is too deep and you would end up either removing the strengthener plate across the bottom of the block or with a sump capacity of about 8 litres. Neither of which are ideal.

I'll take some pics for you Des. You're missing some of the fundamentals. The trick is to cut away the original stiffening ribs, replacing them with new ones which will accept the S16/GTi6 windage tray. You end up with a deeper sump which now carries 6.5L. So long as you extend the pickup you will take advantage of the extra capacity. Extra capacity is also the simplest way of making a hydraulic circuit run cooler. I've run this setup successfully in my track car and have no clearance problems.

There's some pics. in this post:

Might give that a go some time to compare to current setup. Always found our flap baffled steel sump superior to XU10 sumps so have never gone to the effort of modifying the strengther plate. My main concern has always been with block strength. Not took the time to do any stress calcs on a 1.9 block but Peugeot saw a very good reason for crossbracing the bottom of the block which, to me, is a good reason to modify with caution.

Shame that the oil pump pick up is in the way or Pug could have welded the stiffener to the sump. Fools. They should have created an "alloy block skirt brace", just a crossmember that could be unbolted if the crank needed to be removed.
