Yeah, I swapped the interior from a spare-part 1992 mi16 with 180k kilometers. Bought one which engine and air conditioning was stripped, everything else in place and mint condition.. :) Will swap newer abs system from it also, as soon as I have time.

Well I like the abs on snow, specially when some wheels are on grippy surface and others on ice. It's so much easier to just let the electronics sort out the braking instead of you ;) And also it doesnt ruin the tires so easily if you have to make hard braking on pavement :)

you have to run a 20mm spaces so i would be carefull! or not even bother!

mat has them on his 405 T16 and he doesnt like running the spacer so i think he is taking them off again

yes i know, but i have to run spacers as it is, due to Brembo brakes :)

(i have 20mm "bolt through" hubcentric spacers with stud coversion),

so it's not like i'm too bothered about them :P.

Hi everyone,

New member here, and already posted a request in the parts wanted area. Great forum, I must say!!

Figured I'd add my two US spec 'Mi16s here. First is a 1991 405 Mi16...acquired in June....Great shape, Florida and California car, so it is rust free...minor paint cracking near the sunroof but I'll keep it waxed to try and prevent any repainting for a while. I bought it with 135K on it...engine rebuilt at 114K due to the infamous timing belt snapping. The car needed its suspension refurbished, so it now has new ball joints, tie rods, bushings and shocks front and rear. I also had the wheels repainted, and had European market headlights put in it. The US spec plastic ones are such crap!

Note the lovely automatic seatbelts that US crash regulations required in 1990, if the car didn't have an airbag. Annoying at first, but I'm used to the guillotine action of them now.

The other is an '89 with 91K miles that lives in Boston, MA at a friend's house (and where my home office is). My first Mi16, bought in March of 2000. A real shyte box when I got it....now restored (pretty much the same that the '91 needed) and repainted. It's an east coast car that lived in the snow belt before I got it (New York and Pennsylvania...known for using lots of salt on the road) and has seen too much salt and winter driving and is suffering from rust/corrosion on the underside and recently on the lower rocker panels. Plus, the '89s were so poorly built compared to the '91s (the '89 has seen more glue, blu-tack, tape, felt tabs, rubber tabs...you name it...to stop the rattles!), at least for the US cars that is. And they don't have the auto seatbelts.

The '91 is much tighter and feels better built, but my '89 feels faster...go figure!

These cars are super rare here in the US, but...but I love 'em!!

Cheers,

Paul Hughes

What a strange seatbelts, I know about the sliding seatbelts, but the normal one is there alsow?

Yes, it's a US market specific requirement that forced auto makers in late 1989/ early 1990 to install an "active" restraint system...this meant either a driver's airbag, or the automatic seatbelts in the front. They move along the car side of the door frame when you open and close the door when the car is running. You still have to buckle the lap belt separately.

It was a lot cheaper than re-engineering the dash and the car for airbags back then. Peugeot, Saab, Rover/Sterling, Volkswagen...they alll initially addressed the issue with automatic seatbelts, but by 1992, most had switched to driver airbags.

Peugeot wasn't selling many cars in the US at this point, so clearly they went for the cheaper option.

How do the automatic seat belts work? And how are they better than a normal 3 point seatbelt?

I will take a short video with my digital camera tomorrow...the only issue is file size. Will this forum take a file that is a couple of megabytes?

Basically, when the car is off, the belts are as you see them, in the "open" position. When you get in the car and start it, the shoulder belt moves along the track on the body of the car...following the door line, and then dropping into a slot where the normal seatbelt would have its mount. It reverses itself when you open the door or turn off the key. It can also be unlatched at the motorized mount area.

Quite often, this system eventually fails in US cars, and has to be latched and unlatched manually and the motorized piece can be locked in the B pillar.

I guess I'm lucky!

I'll try posting it tomorrow. If I can't I'm happy to send the video to anyone interested. Send me an e-mail to pjphughes@yahoo.com and I'll forward it.

Cheers,

Paul
