The reason for buying it is that my fiends and I are making our annual homage to the Isle of Mull Rally this year but this time we decided that instead of taking our own cars we would set a price of £500 to see what we can get and we will have to complete a series of challenges along the way (you can guess where the inspiration for this came from)

I was pretty pleased to pick this up for £450 but i've been driving it so much I haven't had time to clean it properly, it'll be getting a serious going over before I go though :)

It's a ridiculous you can buy that for £450

But in a fantastic way. I'd love one! Good work

I bought a 156GTA brand new when they just came out, it was a fantastic car that made me smile everytime I got in it and turned the key - black ribbed leather seats, red dials wrapped around you and the sound of that V6. Only problem was it took the dealer 4 months to get everything working on it and I sold it 2 years later and lost an absolute fortune.

Few years later I bought a 147, which again was a great car to be in and great to drive. Bought it 2 years old so it was quite cheap, but by the time I sold it 3 years later it had a whole list of things not working.

You have to love 'em and hate 'em, but there is nothing quite like an Alfa!

It's the noise that does it for me, i've been flooring it everywhere :)

Ah yes, I remember it well! I bought an Impreza after that which also had a fantastic noise, but nothing like the burble from that Alfa V6. Happy Days :)

Nice car.

My brother has just bought a 156 JTD 16v estate.

It goes rather well and is incredibly pretty.

I've heard the derv ones are quick. This thing is a bit of an animal, i reckon it will make a 206 180 look silly.

Ed, why arn't you coming this year?

Nice cars the 156's especially with this engine. Rare colour too.

£450?! Amazing what one can buy for peanuts these days.

How many miles does it have?

Yeah it comes with T&T until December and it's done 130,000 miles so nothing mega. I guess it's cheap because it will do 23mpg if you're very careful and about 9mpg when you're not and in these troubled times not many people can afford the fuel to keep it going, better off with a modern derv instead.

I went to a mates house today who is going on our Mull trip too and he decided to "Improve" the Alfa:

Big engined, thirsty cars go for buttons these days. Then factor in that it's an Alfa, and the public's perception of their reliability, the fact that they are difficult/costly to maintain (even an oil filter change is an arse), and you can see why they are so cheap.

I'm swapping back from my V70 to my 166 3.0 V6 Super at the start of next month so I can try and sell it (it's currently SORN'ed) and even with 4 almost new Falkens on it, less than 100k on the clock and most of the suspension being renewed last year, I'll be lucky to get a few hundred quid. Difficult cars to shift (the 166) at the moment unless you basically give them away.
