It Works!

After running problems that I just couldn't sort out, I got fed up and took the car off the road a few months back,

 

It has since had a new (to me) Longmans head.

A new piper cam (thanks Baz)

A conversion to Motronic 3.1 and Lambda. (Thanks Graham)

 

So given that all of the engine bay wiring has been out and reworked, half the engine had been apart, and I have never done anything like this before, I was a bit worried what would happen when I tried to start it today.

 

Injector plugs off and a good crank to build oil pressure, injector plugs on, long crank - nothing, second go - nothing, third go - just giving up when it spluttered a bit, fourth go - IT WORKS!!!

 

It starts and, for the first time in my ownership, It idles from cold! (Even Miles couldn't make it do that with the Jetronic components I had before)

 

I have some tidying to do and the junk to clear out of it and I can go for a drive tomorrow!

 

How cool is that!

 

(Only the horn, aircon, dodgy paintwork, surface rust on the floor and rev-counter to sort and it will be finished... maybe) But for tonight: :) :) :):D

And back down to earth with a bump.

 

Went for a spin round the block and oil is pouring out of the cam cover.

 

I assume the cam seal is not working well (It's leaking into the cam cover, and I haen't disturbed the crank seal...)

 

It drives really well at part throttle openings, but doesn't like WOT at all. Oh well.

 

When I am back in a happy mood and the engine has cooled down, I'll go and have a look, but right now I am sick of burning my fingers and not too keen to get tools out again.

Check the tps is wired the right way round, got the map connected right?

Nice one!

 

Idling problems can be really frustrating especially on a daily driver.

 

Did you have it remapped or is the cam mild enough to work with the Motronic?

mine works fine wioth a cam not mapped, though obviouslty may not be running to its fuill potential, still havent managed to get mine on a RR again, but it was 132 bhp as a stock lump and the MP3.1 :D

The map is connected up fine, I haven't messed with the TPS wiring at all (406 loom), so it should be OK, but I think it's either that or a failing TPS that gets my vote at the moment. Graham had some ideas too.

Following what was said on here, I haven't had it mapped yet. I am running a lambda and the cam is mild, so I think I'll be ok. Once the other jobs are sorted, I want to get it mapped to be right though.

Before I rebuilt my engine due to cracking a valve & fitted the lambda, I had it remapped at chipwizards & it made 140bhp on waynes rollers.

 

This was also a fresh rebuilt engine but not very a well put together bottom end (my first engine build :lol:), liners & rings from a 20k 1.9 BX Tri engine but with 1.9 pistons & rods on a balanced crank, lightened Mi flywheel & a high flow standard rebuilt head with group n guides, skimmed, a piper 270' cam & vernier so it was properly timed up.

Raised rev limit to 7,000 & it pulled straight to it but the torque delivery was fantastic.

 

In the breif time I drove the new engine after solving the wondering cambelt due to a schoolboy error, with the rebuilt hiflow head, new three angle seats cut & hand lapped valves, lambda & four branch, it felt even better so I'l looking forward to getting the car built its going into.

I have now got a new cambelt and a Payen cam oil seal waiting for me. Hopefully I'll get it sorted by the weekend.

 

The Payen seal looks a lot better made than the Motaquip one I had so hopefully it will do the trick.

Progress is made... The new payen oil seal went in with a generous smear of RTV round the ouside edge. This seems to have worked - no new oil is leaking out. Althouh I am finding oil everywhere - loom trunking, wishbone, driveshaft gaiters... I think it lost around 2 litres in about 1/2 mile!

 

Now I need to figure out how to swap the pins on the TPS and get the lower dash back in and the tools out and take it for a proper shakedown run... Maybe tomorrow.

Swap the pin order at the TPS plug end, if you have a leatherman / swiss army knife the tweezers are generally very good for removing the pins from the plug without damaging them but I've done it with a tiny jewellers screwdriver before.

 

Slide the tweezers down the side of the pin in the slot & squeeze the locking tab to release it so the pin pulls out of the back of the plug, bend the tab back if needed & slide it into its new position until it clicks / locks in place.

 

You'll need a mulitmeter to check the current order before you swap them.

 

Could you make a note of this order before you swap them so that info is here for future reference?

Thanks Graham. I knew the theory but one pin would not come out. eventually I got it out but it had been deformed when it was crimped.

Anyway the upshot is: no oil leaks, no water leaks, and it goes! Rather well too, although I haven't really given it beans yet ( I need a longer drive to get out of 50 limits and traffic.)

I'll document the pin locations from the tps on the engine management thread later. Now I can start tidying the remaining odds and ends. First on the list are the rev-counter and the aircon...
