Exhaust Manifold

Recommended Posts

Hiii. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a few things. I own a 89 205GTI 1.9. I have no idea what engine type it is.

1. How do you tell the difference in the types?

2. The exhaust on it is a two piece system with an olive fitting back box. If the system was swapped could the slip on system be fitted (are the hangers in the same place) ?

3. Im looking at a second hand magnex manifold and having a stainless system made to fit it, but are the exhaust ports the same spacing on all 1.9s and 1.6s?

I think thats all the issues at the mo. Taaa

1, look at the system, if the centre section is welded to the middle silencer its a phase 2 system, also the rear box is the olive type fit on later systems as well.

2 yes a complete phase1 system can be fitted to a phase1.5/2, not that you would want to as the phase2 system is slightly larger bore and gives better torque.

3 yes.

CHEERS. How do you tell the difference in the types of 1.9 engine? I believe there is a couple of different types fitted.

IIRC there are 2 types....

The difference i seen was one manifold was braced and one wasn't....

Prob to help in stopping them cracking...

Theres a few types of engine but all the manifolds are the same part numbers throughout, though with many minor modifications like webbing and bracing

Cheers. Ive now got a stainless manifold and back box, i just need a center section making. Has anyone had much problem removing the 8 nuts from the manifold to head? Are they prone to snapping? What are they like to remove from the head after snapping?

That would be a good thing. Ive got new studs to go in if they come out but i wouldnt risk snapping them to put new studs in.
