Fitting A Rev Counter Dash

Recommended Posts

Furyblade_Lee

I have a 205 Open ( 1988 ) and it has a clock where I would prefer a rev counter... Is it a simple case of finding a 205 dash with a rev counter and swapping it over? Or is it of course not that simple...

Also we are prepping the car for road rallies and I have got a Gti front bumber to fit with fog lights in. There is obviously no swith on the dash to turn them on, where is the front fog switch on a gti? Can I just retro fit one, are there plugs on the loom which make it simple ( likewise is there likely to be existing plugs under the bonnet already from a generic loom to plug the fog light leads into ) or will I have to rig up a new relay and switch myself?/

Sorry for the questions but I cannot get to my car for another few days as it is in a garage.

Hi Lee,

Firstly fitting the lights in the valance is very easy, all the plugs are already there to use. On 205's the lights in the valance are infact driving lights not fog lights so come on with main beam, no need for an extra switch. If the car has never had driving lights before you'll to make some brackets for them to bolt to. Also is would be a good idea to clean up the terminals in the plugs if they haven't been used before. Here is how I made my brackets as they were missing on my XS.

As for the rev counter you need to get hold of some clocks from a TU engined car that had a rev counter, such as a XS, GT or XT - using these clock you would also gain a water temp gauge, however you would also need the dash loom that runs from the fuse box to the back of the clocks, it all plugs straight in. You could also use clocks out of a Rallye if you could find them, IIRC these plug right in (no water temp gauge)

allye, top man! Worryingly, those 2 dashes look wildly different, are you sure both types will fit in my binnacle???

Depends which cowling you have at the moment, the XS use a GTI, all in one type cowling where as the Rallye and majority of base models use a split in two clock set which requires a different cowling,

one like this (which isn't a GTI as advertised!)
