Tu3 Engine?

Recommended Posts

Furyblade_Lee

We have a 1988 205 Open which we use for autotesting currently. Mechanically it is how it left the factory, I THINK it has a TU3 engine?? I have typed TU3 in the search and it comes up with nothing??

Anyway, firstly could somebody clarify that it is a "TU3" and then what is are the basic steps to more power? We have it for my 15 year old nephew, he has learnt to drive in it and done 5 autotests so far, we want to progress hime into basic sprinting over the next 2 years so want a little more power while keeping it 1400cc!

Thanks guys and girls in advance.

If the block stands upright with the inlet on the back and exhaust at the front with the dizzy on the right.. It's a tu!

Twin carbs would be a good start.

You don't think enough 85 bhp is enough for a 15 yo?

Post up a picture of the engine bay and we'll ID the engine type. Being 1988 there is a chance that it has the earlier XY type engine which is what Calvinhorse is alluding to above. These were inclined in the bay and had the gearbox integral with, and beneath the engine using common lubrication - nice!

A quick googles suggests that the Open was 70bhp and 80Nm so I suspect an XY engine. I think that these share mounts points with the XU engines in the GTI etc so more power would be easiest to source from a larger XU engine and box - loads knoking about due to people taking them out of their 205's or even from old 405s, BXs etc at you local scrappy.

If it turns out to be an early 1360cc TU engine then a simple upgrade would be the top end of a 205 XS/AX gt which would give you an additional 15bhp. Depening on what carb you have this could be limited to the carb, dizzy and cam, which are knocking about on the forum but which are getting more expensive.

There are loads of other options still but it depends on your budget.

Cheers,

Adam
