Finding Out The Build Number For A Late 93 205 Gti

Recommended Posts

damo

Hi all,

Trying to work out how near the end my 93 GTi is. I assum its the VIN number right? anyway doing a search just seems to find everything but the build numbers.

I'm assuming being a 1993 one its one of the last ever made?

Anyone can help?

Damo.

I think the one I have here is the 16th to last made. I'm not sure what method Kieran used to determine that. I will ask.

On a 306 it's stamped on the strut and IIRC the numbers relate to a day in number format starting as 1 in Jan 1900. You can work it out in excel using a date formula. Not sure if there's anything on a 205 turret? I painted mine and don't remember painting over it

The only trivial thing I know about Vin numbers is whether they were built in France or not.

I also have a 1993 one and now I'm starting to get curious :).

I think there were some still being built in 1994, in Spain.

Actually, I think mine is one of the Spanish ones, with red carpet, normal door cards and cloth interior (and it used to have a plastic manifold too).

Things like this interest me. Are there other bits of info that can be worked out via the VIN number?

My one doesnt have the red carpet, its dark grey so the late ph2 I assume and not an earlier built GTI as they has read carpets till 92 from reading unless LTD edition. Also has all the toys like PAS and remote locking :)

Interesting to find out the VIN ranges in the UK. Whats the VIN on the GTi you had chipstick btw?

They went from Red to Grey on the late ones so that's correct you should have it. You'll also have the 'lights on buzzer' which I have been meaning to retrofit into mine.

Might be worth asking in Peugeot. One of the chaps in there is quite passionate about helping out. I went in with my Astor '6 for some bits and we got on to build dates and he found out the date, and gave me a list of the build options it had. There's a chance they may be able to find something out from your VIN. Worth a phonecall maybe.

The Grey one was built in France. And apparently was the 14th to last not 16th as I thought.

The Peugeot Sport club have a historical record of this and have identified the oldest and youngest 1900 GTIs.

The official records are paper based and are in France and Peugeot UK had not got access to this when I enquired a few years back.

If you think you have a late one, drop me a pm with your chassis and VIN and I'll map it against some known cars.

Enter your chassis into servicebox, then click on characteristics on the left. Doesn't show much with 205's, but with newer cars like 306's it will show you everything about the original spec, RP number, etc.

Didn't realise it was made in France. As for it being the 14th to last one made, I can't confirm that as that was just what I was told many years ago (around 2001) after it had been in an accident and the accident repair people looked it up and told me this.

Generally, the newer the car; the more information characteristics will show. So even ph2's will be more elaborate than 1.5's.

From the info Henry has tracked it looks like I take the no. 1 spot for the last known gti made as the Vin numer is 4 newer than the now number 2 gti :)

So a very good find :)

my 205 was registered 28-02-1994, wouldn't mind finding out when it was built?

ablister id pm henry as reg doesnt really count as cars can sit around for a few years at the dealers so would have newer reg numbers. vin and engine number should point to its build location in the list. the only real people who will know is pug france in the archives it was still the dark ages for computer records back then a bit!

my find beat the current registered gti by 4 taking the no. 1 spot for registered on electronic record to my suprise. my local pug dealer could only look up the amount made (530 from memory) but i may pop in for another chat as he said from the records he had when looking was they all got made early in 93 and that was the last run. now i have my v5 etc, so the vin and other details im going to see if he can help further when next in the dealers :)

He also mentioned the CTI was built till late 93 but moved to a 1.9 engine with the CAT, using a lower 105 bhp powered unit and not a tweaked GTI engine

I've used http://www.autobaza.pl/ to find out the history on my car.

Built 18/12/1990. Not registered until Oct 92!

Although, this maybe because it was one of the Japanese export orders that were cancelled.
