Looking To Buy A 205,rough Value And Tips Required

Recommended Posts

vtifan

hey guys this is my 1st post proper,so i am looking to buy a 205 gti for a wee project,i have owned a few in the past and actually built one of the mi16's that is on the frontpage owners cars but been a good few years now.

i have been looking at a car local to me and have kind of agreed a price of 700 quid for a sorrento green i.6,has very good leather,90k miles on it,no mods at all

its an honest car i.e never been painted etc,but it has been off road for 1 year and sat outside, paint is great above kit but there is a bit of rust just in front of rear wheels on sill, and at the usual join in the door aperture on the sill, not rotten and would clean up with wire brush and some rust treatment i would think, will maybe need a 2 inch square patch at wheel just above sill, but thats pretty much all i can see welding wise or rust wise on whole car,no stress cracks above rear windows at all,guy bought this from just gti's about 2 years ago, would this be considered a good shell ?

mehanically it has a problem with the throttle cable which is no biggie, but i think the rear beam might be siezed as i can hardly bounce the rear,am planning a gti'6 swap so obviously going to upgrade rear beam, just wondering if you think this is a fair price or i could have much better for the money,no pics sorry, cheers for any opinions guys

doesn't sound a bad price to be fair as has low mileage for the age really. i have seen when looking around the Peugeot forums a guide on refurbishing rear beams if i come across it i will post it on here for you.

mileage is pretty irrelevant to me, I'd be wary that if its been off the road for a year that you might need to budget for a couple of extras, but nothing thats unexpected when buying a second hand car. Would be worth checking over the wishbones, cv boots, track rod ends, etc etc. all simple stuff really

i am planning a major overhall anyway mate, will be replacing quite a lot of bits, mainly bodywork that i want to be sure of as i've not owned one for 10 years and the standard of shells is bound to have gone down since i last owned one, seems ok though so i will just buy it i think

If your planning an overhall i wouldn't worry about mileage or anything like that, the only thing to be concerned about is rust under the carpets and sound proofing, mainly where rear passengers feet would be, and on the bulkhead. Try and get i jacked up and do some poking if you can

it all seems pretty solid underneath, surface rust on sills and doorchecks but only bit i can find needs patched is a small bit above sill on rear wheelarch, just know there will be pinholes under paint as bubbling a wee bit, sill joints underneath are spot on,inner wings perfect as been waxoyled, even the front panel looks clean and i had to weld my mi16 there when it was 10 years old lol,1st job is getting rid of all rust and getting her painted, really wanted a white gti but got the sorrento, seriously considering painting her white with a couple of ecosse bits, not that they do much for the poor old 205 now, will put up a pic of my old mi16 205 that i built from a 100 quid red shell, stiege has it or had it at one time,i did all the bodywork on the car apart from paint,as in i gave it to my mate and all he had to do was paint it,no rubbing down to do,only things changed since i had it are the wheels,i had dished fondmetals on it,and the rear bumper as it had the full peugeot sport bumpers with a twin 4 inch centre exit exhaust,it was ten years ago lol Edited by vtifan

think i remember your car from before steige had it. Did it have fondmetal 4000 wheels (deep dish 5 spokes)?

While you're looking at the bodywork, might be worth checking the boot floor (particularly if it has a rear wash/wipe)...

Also check the panel seam at the bottom of the pedal area - hard to see without lifting the interior carpet or looking down behind the engine, towards the steering rack UJ. A common place for them to rust through.

Oo thought of some more... :)

Check the rear bump stop mounts haven't rusted off completely. Check inner wings/front quarter panels behings lights (pretty obvious one, that one). Rear bumper supports behind the rear wheels get a lot of grot too; if they've not dissolved away then they're probably rusted solid ;) but depends how well it's been stored really, and what kind of wet weather use the car's had.

well after 8 years away i'm a proud 205 owner again, couldn't find any rot at all really, couple of bits need attention, and the rear beam is totally fubared, apart from that quite a decent base, now just need to find an auto tuning 93 bodykit, sorry i know most wont appreciate that but i spent many nights looking at the ecosse catalogue in the days before t'interweb dreaming of having my 205 in this kit,sad i know :o dont worry there wont be lexus lights or 18 inch chrome wheels, going to keep it kind of period with bits that were available in the early days,or maybe just get one of those lovely polish bodykits off the bay :D

car not going to see winters or rain anymore but the first job is to strip the underside kill all rust and give it a couple of good coats of epoxy mastic paint while i save for more goodies, will get a thread started when i get going, cheers guys

nope, wasn't me as no longer have the car in my sig!

I'm in Glenrothes so not far away from you, could come and have a look at your car if you don't mind? Always good to see 205s nowadays as quite rare on the roads around here

i just know the car from my old 205 days, used to see it alot around here when you must have had it and then saw it when steige had it.

I have just bought another 205 last month after being away from them for about 6 or 7 years, been looking for a while and walked away from a few after time wasting sellers claiming their car was rust free etc. There's just something about them that is addictive where i just can't keep away from them!
