Seat Leon Mk1 Cupra Tdi150 Getting Hot And Grumbling At Me

Recommended Posts

BlueBolt

I know some of you on here have some knowledge about these cars, and I have no luck on the seat forum as they're all a grumpy bunch of sods!!

My Leon has just got a little on the hot side!! The water temp is up to the third bar (normally sits dead centre) and the fans are not kicking in...

Has anyone had these issues with them or know about them?? Going to have to wait till the weekend to sort it as I haven't got time to do anything about it till then, but thought I'd see if anyone has had the same??

The car is an 04 reg.

The other noise (grumbling) is when the car is on steering lock, I'm pretty sure it's a fluid level thing... Not checked it as a) it's my birds car and I've got enough to do to my own car. And B) I get moaned at when I want to do anything to my own car so she can piss off till I have time.

Now that's backfired as its got too late lol

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

I have a 130Tdi bora. The coolant temp sensors are know to be dodgy I have to replace mine to make the gauge work but by the sounds of things yours is working so thats good.

There are two fans. They are terrible and known to cause problems and cease. (mine actually set on fire when I was trying to fix an aircon problem!) There is one that comes on slow speed when you turn the aircon on so thats the best test to see if your fan works. If not check the fuses on the box on top of the battery thats where mine blew when the fans ceased. If that hasn't gone and the big fan doesn't spin on slow when you turn the aircon on I would say that your fan is shot. Could double check and make sure there is power getting to the fans.

Hope that helps a bit!

Aren't they made of plastic? I know the 1.8T's are.

Weser: thanks for the info, gives me a good starting point.

Got a mate at ATS who's going to plug it into a diagnostic thingy tomorrow to see if there's anything obvious from that and getting my elec tester back tomorrow evening so I can poke around on Saturday...

This is very common on vag stuff, impellors come clean off the shaft and sit there in the water way.

Quick check from a diagnostics comp shows nothing... However, the fans are definitely not working, so had a look at the fuses under the battery cover to find the centre one of five has blown. What is this fuse and were an I find a fuse map for it as I haven't found anything online other than the main board in drivers side of the dash...??

Are these fuses VAG only?? They're not your usual type and I have no confidence that halfrauds will be able to help me....??

No idea if they are VAG only probably are. That fuse 40amp? Is the one that for the front fans. Also check the far right 30amp normal blade thats for the fans as well. So sounds like you have probably got the fan problem I described earlier.

This link will give you info about the fan problem. Well common. http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/59897.aspx?PageIndex=1

Assuming you have climate control, the fans are supposed to run at low speed when the climate is on (ie not in ECON mode) which helps to cool the aircon compressor. However, there's a week resistor in the fans which fails - when it does they won't run at low speed. The compressor gets hot and so the fans kick in at high speed to cool it, run for a bit then turn off. This constant pulsing on and off at high speed is what causes the 40A fuse to go after time. Once that has gone, there's nothing to cool the aircon compressor (or the engine either) and you run the risk of damaging one, the other or both (aircon compressor damage is more likely to happen first though) - is worth trawling through the thread above as it has the answers to most questions you'll come up with about the fans.

I only have one fan that works on the low speed with the aircon on. (the right one as you look at the front of the car) It works everything fine and doesn't overheat. The other one comes in if it gets hot but they dont get that hot. the fans are well expesive from VW. Check out Steves VW chelmsford for good spares. Pretty sure yours will be the same as VW ones.

You could probably get away with just replacing the fuse but your fans will only keep kicking in and out of high speed as they have no low speed. Could try the mod suggested no idea if its any good I have not tried it!

hope this helps
