find a company that rents vans with tow bars. I rented a car trailer for a weekend for £40

Get a quote from Shiply or whatever they are called.

The quote will initially sound expensive, but factor in return fuel and you'll be surprised afterwards when you collect yourself.

I got a quote for a delivery from about 200 miles away. I then disregarded it and hired a shogun for £48 for the day and used a mate and his trailer. In the end with fuel, I think it would have been £20 dearer. By the time you factor in lunch and time, it's worth considering on a vehicle which you are prepared to buy blind.

I've used these guys. They are a network of people who own a car transporter and you arrange with someone near you.

Cost wise was under £100 inc all your insurance, generous mileage allowance etc, then just add fuel !

If you can't tow a trailer on your license you will need to check the weight of the vans you are looking at hiring. I am guessing you are unable to drive more than 3500kgs on your license and I think you will find some of the larger vans such as big mercedes and ivecos are more than this.

Don't think you can hire the 5tonne transit/sprinter/dailys, they're mega rare and generally tippers.

there's lots of 5ton vans around but they will all be tacho, and most wont have the licences for them.

however the larger vans tend to still be 3.5ton.

I've driven more vans than I care to remember and have never come across a 5t box van.

Either way I doubt one would be wide enough with the wheel arch intrusion inside.

I've paid £200 to get a car delivered to me from Cornwall to Aylesbury so its the simplest option.

Bit of quick rough calculations based on a vehicle and the weight of a 205 in/on top/behind tells me that for a 2 1/2 hour jouney you could either be talking an 80 mile cross country jaunt or 150 miles on better roads. Diesel return is likely to be around £100 plus. Add hire on to that of say £60 for a vehicle....

Ignoring the fact you are in rality unlicenced, you're either going to have to pay to have a company deliver it, use a friend,a trailer and a tow vehicle or put that couple of hundred quid towards a local 205 and save the hassle.

Is it safe to assume that the 205 isn't driveable? If it is, look at getting a train, some day cover and tax.

Maybe I'm getting old but convenience and less hassle get as much thought as the cost. The car would have to be really cheap with the transport costs factored to be worth bothering with IMO.
