Running 2 Head Units

Recommended Posts

Daviewonder

Hello All

I'm planning on running a CD player in my Mini but the car already has an 8 Track player that I would like to keep in there.

Does anyone know the safest way of doing this? Is there a type of relay that I could use so I only have power going to one device at a time? Would it cause an issue having both players connected to the same speakers, power from one head unit travelling down the speaker wires to the other? Could I use diodes to overcome this?

Thanks :)

I would use a relay on the ignition lives of both. I.e put ignition live on common then 8 track ignition live on NC and cd ignition live on NO. Use a switch to turn the relay on and off to switch between 8 track and cd. I would put diodes on for safety. I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

Will diodes not mean you effectively cut out half of the signal range to your speakers?

I am not proper clued up on diodes and speakers to be honest do you get reverse voltage on the speakers? It is an easy test though. I know you will get a volt drop over the diode so will lose some of the forward signal range. Whether it is audible or not I dont know?

This is all new to me too. I can't even find anything on Google about it.
