Recommend Me The Best Roads North Wales Has To Offer

Recommended Posts

Mad Scientist

So, next Friday I'll be heading to Anglesey through North/Mid Wales. I'll be alone, have the whole day to dispose of and a full tank of V Power to burn.

The obvious ones that I have been to before, and remember as epic, are Élan Valley, Evo triangle and Llanberis Pass. I'd like to get some ideas for other great roads to have some fun on.

In a past life I spent days charging around Wales with a Subaru club, but I never lead, and can't remember where any of the decent roads were, barring the obvious choices above.

I'll need a decent lunch stop too, if anyone fancies a mini meet?!

Cheers,

Pete

Theres some great roads there, i have not been there for about 5 years but back then they seemed a bit hot about speeding!

North Wales have always been funny about speeding, hiding cameras in horse boxes and all sorts. That said, you don't always have to speed to have fun. 60 round a corner can be quite amusing! ;)

Let's have some recommendation people!

The A5 between Bethesda and Capel Curig down the Ogwen Valley is great fun - very similar to the Llanberis pass but it opens out a lot more closer to Capel Curig. It's probably already on your route though, as it's not that far down the A5 from Betws-y-Coed and the Evo triangle.

If it's not too much of a detour it's worth going into Llandudno and down Marine Drive, which circles the Great Orme and is the current opening stage for the Wales Rally GB.

The real mega mega rally stage style (in your imagination obviously) quiet roads for me are:

B4368 Craven Arms to Clun (a bit far south for you maybe)

B4393 west from Llanfyllin, good but turns epic up the north side of Lake Vyrnwy, it's a bizarre backwater, very quiet and almost Italian lakeside dreamscape. Then at the head of the lake turn right onto the very minor road through Rhiwargor, up over a summit where BL companies used to test their cars for hillclimbing loaded (apparently) and down an amazing narrow road, that hangs onto the hill edges down the valley and you eventually join the B4391into Bala. A good route towards a short but fabulous road....

A4212-B4391 Bala to Ffestiniog. Safe speed twisting undulating switchback brilliance, quite a workout without PAS!

Some nice tips there Sandy, thanks. I've asked on another forum too, so I'll plot a route and post it up.

It will be nice to do this again in the 205 soon!

I found a great road by accident on the way back from Bangor last week, near Denbigh and went past a village called Nannerch.

It turns off the main road to Denbigh and starts with an incline and then some twisty undulating roads with heath moors either side and it was deserted, the A541 I think.
