Hehe I was just about to post that too. Awesome, I knew I can expect more nice words about 205 from Hammond then from Jeremy. Great stuff, but I am a bit surprised about 1.6 opinion as better then 1.9. What do you think guys ?

I agree to a point. The 1.6 does feel free revving and lighter on its feet. Tbh I don't think there's much between them pace wise either.

i have had both and prefer the character of the 1.6 as standard cars go hence i have 1 now apart from the noise at motorway speeds due to the lower gearing i cant really find much to not like!

Hmm Interesting. I'm 205 mad but I never had a chance to own or even driven 1.6 GTI. Very interested now how they are, through years I am looking at the ads on the internet I was kind of ignoring ads with 1.6 and I might start looking at them with more thoughts now. Especially as they always cheaper then 1.9's

with the amount of modified 1.9's and almost all have been in some way i reckon standard cars will appreciate in value more and the performance difference between 1.9 and 1.6 really isnt as vast as generally thought!

 

so my opinion is that anyone who wants a 205 gti shouldnt dismiss the 1.6 out of hand! i too believed the hype and my 1st was a 1987 phase 1 205 1.9 and both others i have owned since have been 1.6's including my current car which i love and am very proud of!
