Volvo V70 Vs Honda Accord

Recommended Posts

unariciflocos

Hi guys, my Focus is getting a bit tired now so I'm thinking about getting a newer car that will also have towing capabilities to take the Pug to and from races. I've been looking at Volvo V70 D5 with a 2.5 diesel and 163 Bhp or the Honda Accord 2,2 diesel and 140 Bhp.

Looking at robustness, quality of labor, price of parts, ease of maintenance, which one would you go for? My budget is 6 to 7000 Euros.

Very difficult one for most of us to compare given your location unless you're after UK registered vehicles and will be spending most of your time here?

I can say that the Volvo will be very comfortable and will tow a decent sized trailer with ease, excellent engines, very easy to maintain, I've serviced a few and not encountered any issues.

Sandy and Bonzai could vouch for the Accord with a petrol engine :)

The Hondas are bombproof, widely considered the most reliable cars out there, plus the 2.2 diesel is ace.

I'm moving to Germany with my job, will be located in Baden Wurtenberg area. My commute will be 50 miles daily, so ideally looking for a diesel. The Japanese are not really well known for diesels, so wondering how that engine will hold up.

I like the Volvo's - hugely comfortable, well built and very practical. I have never found the 5 cyl diesels very economical though, and found my own Volvo very expensive to run/service, averaging about 35 mpg, although it was an auto as I would imagine most would be?

The Mrs' dad has a 2006 Accord 2.2 CTDi manual estate which has been fabulous without any problems over 200k miles, and pretty damn near as practical as the Volvo, but gets 45 mpg all day long, with 50 mpg on a run.

Justin.

Then it's really a no brainer, Honda it is. Thanks for the advice!

I have no direct experience of either, but from memory, there were problems with some variants of the 2.2 CDTI Honda engine - premature clutch failures and something relating to the turbo from memory, although I might be wrong on that.

I'm sure Google will reveal more and whether it is an issue on the age and variant of cars that you're looking at.

I've got a 2006 CDTi Tourer with 58000 miles on it. Good forum to join is www.typeaccord.co.uk. Early models had issues with cracking exhaust manifolds, Honda replace under warranty up to 125,000 miles and 7 years. Clutches seem to be first point of failure after remapping.

I've done 9000 miles in mine since getting it in November and its been faultless so far. Tows a 1.4 tonne caravan with no issue. Rear legrooms poor for taller people. Engine is very refined for a diesel; plenty of torque at 2k but unlike many diesels will rev out to the redline.

With a 50 50 mix of town and motorway i struggle to get 40 mpg average. Better economy is achievable but i don't have the attention span.

Executive trim level is highly recommended; comes with all the toys and they all work also. Think i may be getting unnaturally attached to mine :o

Not much experience of anything Honda but little Civics. However from all experiences Volvo, I'd say 'heavy'. If MPG AND comfort are paramount, then I would say go Honda diesel and hope you've bought a good one in the first place.

I may be a tall bloke, but I don't plan on spending any time on the backseat in MY car :D. I was also looking at older BMW 525 Tds, but think I'm going to start looking for a low milage Honda.

There will be no remap or any upgrades of any kind on my road car. I never want to go down that route again, bog standard is best.

My old man has an 05 V50 D5 and that gets 45 on a mixed run.

Rear leg room is terrible and it actually feels very small inside when your sat in the drivers seat.

I'm not a fan of it at all.

V70's are much bigger/better, certainly rear legroom isn't an issue.

You should get way more than the above MPG with a D5. I can't comment much on honda's tbh and i'm Volvo-biased obviously, but our local specialist can't praise them enough for the fact their reliability is constantly putting him out of business...

We have a 05 plate accord 2.2 cdti sport at work. its done 160k+, it still flies and get thrashed daily. ive done 4000 miles in it myself and is a very nice car to drive. It gets serviced regularly and hasn't had any major issues. shame the boot is a saloon. it doesn't swallow prams and luggage aswell as a good hatchback like my primera.

no brainer really Honda all day long, but then again i'm biased as i hate volvos but even so I can't think of any redeeming feature they have over anything else, with the Honda you know its going to work electrically and mechanically

Blimey! What year? Is your dad 7ft tall?

I'm 6ft but dad's 6'4 & never had an issue across 850/V70's for many years & all 3 phases, but i can see where you're coming from, with a tall driver & raked seat position, then fairly tall rear passenger it might get a bit cramped, but they're cavernous by most cars' standards tbh!

Edit; You said '05 so ph2 shape basically, can't say i've been in the back of mine much, i guess they might actually be smaller as it is everywhere else tbh, despite being a 'bigger' car than the older versions!

My 205, my bikes and my motorbike will be coming as soon as I get settled in. At the moment i'm having trouble finding rent. When they see I'm Romanian they either say it's been lent already or that they don't have any apartments to rent, even though I can see the adds for 20 or 30 apartments. And on top of it all I'm looking for an apartment with a garage and a parking space and not to mention that I'm taking with me two gas guzzlers to one of the greenest places in Germany. I'll send you a PM with my contact details.

And to get back on topic, I have my mind pretty set up on a Honda now.
