Retro Fitting A Temperature Gauge To A Gr Model

Recommended Posts

TheHawk

I have recently been having issues with my GR overheating i believe i have manged to fix the issue but its hard to tell without a temperature gauge. I noticed there is a sensor already in the engine block for the warning light is there a way of piggybacking off that sensor to wire in a temperature gauge. Or is it a more complex process requiring me to install a second sensor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm going to assume that the one for the warning light will just be on/off (ie. on when too hot, off the rest of the time) that doesnt mean to say you cant use the hole already there, and then either get an after market gauge and sensor or see if you can snag one of a gt/xs and the like.

alternatively (depending on how accurate you need it to be) one of these http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f1627b8a8

with the temp sensing end stuck in a pipe or redundant sensor hole. poke cable through a grommet in the bulkhead, slight adjustment with a stanley blade and hey presto :)

Heres how i got my temparature sensor in a pipe:

You can see the actual sensor screwed in at the bottom. This is custom made but i've seen many people with these - you must be able to buy them from somewhere, failing that if you go in any enginieering place with a half decent drawing they will be able to make one up quickly and cheaply.

easier to add a second sensor to the thermostat housing, would yhink there is a blanking plug, then fing a cluster with a gauge

When I fitted GTi dials to my XS the water temp gauge worked straight away no need to do anything so surely he could fit a gauge to the sender it wiould take the feed and work? Or am I wrong being different models my XS and Hawks GR.

As Welshpug suggests, use the thermostat housing as using the top hose means its only works when the stat is open or if it stuck closed you will never know its over heating! I fitted one to my Rallye using the existing sensor, worked perfectly.

as I said fitting the sensor in the top hose after the stat isn't ideal.

Fair point, i might think about swapping mine over if i ever get to the bottom of the things-to-do list.
