Recommend Me A Classic Car Insurance Company

Recommended Posts

NOsMAN

The classic car insurance company I have been using have decided to change the criteria of what is defined as a classic car.

The premium has doubled (from £130 to £260) which I think is unacceptable considering I only did 10 miles of my 3k allowance last year :(

The car is just a 205 Turbo Technics

One final question is can I get my 20 years NCD back? because when I transferred to classic policy they never told me that they wouldnt carry all that bonus over ( have regrets about swopping it to classic policy)

Would like recommendations on classic car insurance companies which are cheap :D

thanks

NCB - if you mean what the give is maxed at say 9 years, but you haven't had a claim in 20, then they should confirm you have not had a claim in 20, as the 9 is just their maxiumum NCB of years that count with them.

Had exactly this with the misses car this year.

Had to have words with teh comoany she left to get them to correct their letter confirming the NC years for the new insurer.

classic car policy totally ignores all NCD meaning I've lost all of it. They dont give NCD at all.

ncb lasts 2.5 years from when you last used it. get in touch with your previous insurer and ask for proof. i have just renewed my policy with footman james as no one could get close to the price even though its £30 more than last year.

Still not seeing a real issue here, unless it is of course me (or others) not understanding what No Cliams Discount is and how it relates to a No Claims Period.

The No Claims Period is not "awarded", it is EARNT.

i.e. every year you do not have a claim, it is exactly that - another year without a claim.

A No Claims Discount is related to this period in which you have Not Claimed and a company may choose to award the discount, or not.

However it's irrelevant if the insurance company you are with 'recognise' it, 'award' it, take it on a date and sleep with it.

If you can prove that in that year you did not have a claim you can use that to demonstrate to an insurer that you did not have a claim.

And the easiest way to do this is to request your insurance company (even if you are leaveing them) to confirm how long you have been insured with them and if you claimed in that period or not. You can then put this together with any other pre-dating no claims period to show a new insurer how many total years you have had without any cliams (your No Claims Period). They will then give you a No Claims Discount based on that.

Here's a real life example of people not getting "awared" No Claims but being able to use their No Claims Period for a NCD:

Company car drivers - they do not get "AWARDED" any no claims. However you can always approach your employers insurance company and they will be happy to confirm how many years you have had without a cliam. You can then use this with your private insurance company of proof of no cliams. They will then use that to give you a discount against their insurance premium which they will call a No Claims Discount.

This is a well known and recognised process. Indeed my company even have an on-line form to complete to request it.

I've had to do both the company car thing as wel as (several times) the having to prove of a No Claims Period.

Sometimes it takes a bit of talking, and once even a chat with the Manager to get them to agree what their NCD is actually linked to and why they give it (to award those that have not claimed!).

It seems that many of these insurerance agents are just phone operators, so you may have to perserver or go a bit higher up the food chain, but if you can effectively get your point accross they are left with no-where to go if they are trying to resist recognising it.

You however do have somewhere to go - the insurance ombudsman. If you have to you can always throw that in and suggest that if they refuse to recognise third party proof of a no cliams period (previous insurers letters etc) then you will happily make a representation to the IO and let them decide if they should (I've used that one too).

Ok - all the above sounds long winded and a bit fo a pain. But when the NCD can add up to £100's off your premium how many days work would you do to earn that kind of money?? In my book almost always worth the hassell....

Oh - The 2.5 years NCB thing - it's about the period between you being insured. So if you have continuous insurance, or a break of 2.5 years or less within it then it still all counts. It's irrellevant if one insurer during that time did not 'award' a discount so long as you can prove you did not claim during that time - ie get them to send a letter - which in my experiance they all will do, even if you have to point out that if they don't you wouldn't consider ever coming back to them and indeed recommend that to all your freinds/car clubs.

Good luck.

I'd say that £130 was very cheap and £260 is about right for a modified classic.

Because you do not have a classic car policy with us :)

Classic car policies are cheap if you qualify for them, some people do, some do not. Classic car policies also have their pit falls, eg most do not accrue NCB.

Neil@Greenlight

Hi

We have just come onboard as a Forum Trader and are able to offer modified classic polices. With your mileage being so low the premiums can be very competetive.

If you would like us to provide you a quote for modified classic policy please drop a PM with your contact number and prefered time and i'll call you back to do a quick quote.

I used to have a modified 309 GTi myself so understand modifications well. We can offer Agreed Value cover and like for like on modified parts.

Best Regards

Neil

Neil@greenlight your customer service is pants!. I tried to get a quote on your website and a customer service rep phoned me a few days later offering a very competitive quote.(Which seemed to good to be true) I told the guy id take out the policy the next day as i needed to dump some cash in my bank account and he said he would ring me the next day to get my payment. I was pretty excited to get the car all legal and danced all the way to the bank with my cash then the next day i got no phone call.......so i phoned today and some other chap tells me greenlight cant give me the policy they offered for some unexplained reason to do with the actual vehicle. Which baffles me as you have taken the time to sign up here to drum up custom from 205 owners. (I own a 1.6 gti with no outrageous mods etc)

A phone call to let me know that you couldnt actually give me the insurance you offered would have been fine instead of wasting my time. Anyway, with Adrian flux now and my cars back on the road after 3+ years so happy days :)
