Recommended Posts

firstcar_205gti

hi all unfortunatly met the police today, me and my mate had a small race of the lights to see who would win which i did :). unfortunatly failed to see that there was a police car behind as i was to busy watching the lights, copper said that id get a letter through the post saying whats gunna happen. apparently i might have to go to court and do a driving course and will get a fine plus 6 points, what does this mean ive had my licence 2 years and people tell me i would loose my licence and have to do it again plus my insurance will go through the roof just wanna know if any of this is true or if any body knows whats gunna happen thanks.

I suspect the roads will be a bit safer for the road users and particularly the pedestrians of Berkshire if you lose your licence. Save the exuberance for track days next time.

Can all you say hand on heart you did not ever have a race with your mates when you were 18?

I know I cannot say that truthfully so I'm going to save the hypocritical comments.

I am sure that losing his driving license will be more than a lesson learned by the OP, as more than 6 points in the first 2 years and it is bye bye license.

I agree with tom, 18 giddy and just trying to have abit of fun!

Hell i got caught by the coppers doing doing silly speeds over a round about i took off landed hard and i fought i snapped my anti roll bars to find when i pulled in the laybay the rozzers where in hot pursuit! they said the same to me 12months later nothing arrived, 24 months later still nothing... today still nothing and pointless lol. They did ask me how fast i was going and i said 25Mph... their desciption was something along the lines of excess speeds thoughout chorley, nearly lost persuit to find sparks flying from underneath the car which brought to a stop.

The key is! did you sign a piece of paper if you did then your Kerfooked! i didnt which i why i think i got away with it!

These days i say ive had my fun! misses wont let me go over 40mph unless she gives me a good reason to put the foot down!

for your first 24 months from passing test you're on a probationary period. so if it's within the 2 years since you passed your test, and you get 6 points, you'll get your license revoked. i was in the same boat for something else

you could contest the speed and possibly end up with a lesser fine / less points, but that's another ball game

As car enthusiasts I'm pretty sure we've all been there (anyone who hasn't, wow what a boring life you must have lead) but some are luckier than others.

Did he actually give you a ticket, or say what offence you'd committed? Sounds like he might just be trying to put the frighteners on you!

How long exactly have you had your licence? You say you've had it 2 years. If that's a rough guess and it's in fact nearly 2 years, then you may be unfortunate. If you have had it at least 2 years, then you are going to have to live with the insurance increase if you do get 6 points.

Did the officer state what offence(s) exactly you had commited? It's odd there isn't more clarity. If he clocked you doing say 38 in a 30, and he had proof he would have probably dealt with a ticket there and then. I suspect it's liklely he had no evidence. No mention of a section 59 or anything?

You really are going to hve to wait and see and live with what ever comes of it unfortunately.

If he didn't caution you, didn't issue any notice of intended prosecution or advise you of any rights then I suspect what he's going to do is push video evidence to the CPS and see if they feel it is worth pursuining. But, when this happened to me, they still cautioned me - even though nothing ever came through.

I would suspect they need to serve you a NiP within 14 days of the actual offence, so basically if you receive no paperwork within 14 days you're most likely fine.

Ah! The old traffic light Grand Prix - I've had one or two of those in my days. Never been caught though - that's always the trick.

I suspect you may not hear anything as haven't been issued notice, still I'd be a bit 10p/5p for the next couple of weeks.

ive had it just over 2 years now, she said careless driving as i had no consideration for other road users etc. that was it really and she was screaming at me and going mad. i wasnt speeding though i only got up to 30-35 in a 40 zone, start to finish was only a few hundred yards.. <_<

I'd like to see how they'd prosecute you for careless driving when you're within the speed limit and (I'm assuming) weren't wrecklessly swerving all over the road. They could have a point that you didnt check your mirrors for rozzers before setting off though¬!!

edit: bad spelling!

Come on, there must be something more to this. The coppers don't pull you up screaming and bawling at you because you set off from some traffic lights up to 35mph.

Sounds like they were just trying to scare you. As others have mentioned, doesn't appear to be anything they can 'do' you for.

Thought you usually got a ticket? :P

Did they breathalyse you? if not I am sure you can get out of the ticket somehow, have a search on the net.

Either the OP is telling half a story or the police were trying to teach him a lesson over something petty to make him think twice before doing more dangerous.

When I was 17 (unlicenced) I hopped in a friends car in a car park to practice parking manoeuvers. I outstayed my welcome and must have spent a good quarter of an hour doing bay parks, parallel etc etc. Anyway I was spotted on CCTV and a traffic officer pulled in. It was a couple of weeks before my test and I was petrified. I knew I was in the wrong and it really hit home that I may not have the chance to actually take that test I had booked. After a lengthy chat the officer said - and i'l always remember his exact words 'if you don't get anything through the post within 2 weeks, then it's because I've been lenient' as he slowly rips up the ticket.

He then reclined his seat, lit a cigarette and spoke for a good 20 minutes about his car history. The conversation quickly ended as a young lad came sideways into the carpark not noticing the police car. The friendly policeman fired his lights up and asked us to wait where we were and he flew off. Must have waited a good hour thinking he might come back before we gave up :D

Did make me think, that experience.

You can hit 35mph within a few moments from setting off, i reckon you were caught around 50-60, and you'll get a summons for dangerous driving, and thus 3-6 points and a hefty fine.

well to answer the original question the I 'think' you'll not be offered the course available to those caught speeding. You can't go either if you're between 18 & 22 (I think, but don't hold me to it) or if you've been caught speeding and was offered the course (and accepted) in a period of up to 3 years previously?

They may have just given you the telling off for being a bit of a prune, or you maybe unlucky to get a summons, however it can't be for speeding so dangerous driving or undue care etc, and with that the points are between 3 & 9 with a fine. But as many have said it may never come through at all.
