Des Devlopments Ss Exhaust Packing

Recommended Posts

vern

I have a des devlopments ss exhaust. I and i think it is getting louder. My question is do the exhaust made by des, have sound deadening packing in the silencer boxes, if they do does the packing deteriate with time and oil contamination and require repacking if even posible.

I know des did not make the exhausts them selves, somebody local to them made them up if someone has the contact details for the company that made them that would be great.

I'll see if Boombang remembers, he did help out there a bit years back IIRC

Any exhaust place can re-pack them, SS systems are well known for doing this and it means cutting the box open and TIGing it back together

I did this to the rear box on the road rally car, sadly it didn't really make a deal of difference. Anywhere that can TIG weld can do it really, the key is making the cut as thin as possible so you have less to weld up. I cut the box open in my bandsaw so it ended up with a nice thin saw cut.

Depends on how the box is constructed, but it's certainly possible.

And yes, all mufflers will deteriorate over time as the sound deadening breaks up and gets blown out.

Thanks for the speedy replies.

The exhaust has not done many miles but is about 5 years old, but has had some oil go through it when the turbo was playing up, would that effect the packing?

Miles when you say any exhaust place, do you mean a specialist, or a Kwikfit stylee establishment.

In a word no! After everyone raving about them on here i aproached DES/MIJ to do a stainless system for my 306 rallye. They promised a stainless hi flow replacement system that would be no louder than standard. I got a Chav cannon that was unbearably loud. After my third visit back to them to 'sort' it out I gave up and put a standard system back on.Typical longlife style crap.

Still pisses me off now after over 4 years :D

Welsh yes I mean someone who makes exhausts.

The exhaust fit is good, and I am sure it was quieter one I first fitted it. my only grip is it seems to be more intrusive now, maybe I am just getting older and drive one of the "sh1t 8v turbos".

Just need somewhere to repack it for me know.

That's interesting, as I didn't know it was MIJ who made these. I know of MIJ as I've seen them advertising on eBay and I know they've done a few custom systems for some of the guys on Alfa Owners. But they look like a typical Longlife/Powerflow outlet, and not the sort of place that does proper performance enhancing, quality exhausts, as we were lead to believe the DES system was when it went on sale.

Mine is stupidly loud. But that's my own fault as I chose the single box version when I ordered it from DES. By the sounds of it, it perhaps wouldn;t have been much better as a twin box design. When I eventually (eventually, PAH! Who am I kidding? ) get mine back on the road I'm getting a middle box put in. Will probably go to SOS as they are local(ish).

Mine never sat quite straight either. I know 205 tolerances are known to be on the generous side, but Taylorspug commented when he was working on my 205 that he'd seen a handful like this and suspected they'd built the jig from a badly fitted example.

Mine was twin boxed, infact the middle box ended up being about 3 foot long to try and get the noise to a reasonable level.

The main problem was they weren't capable of making oval boxes so this obviously limited the size of backbox they could use.

Presumably becuase they don't make their own boxes, I guess. They probably just buy in the boxes in various sizes and specs, along with the various tailpipe designs, and then weld it all together,

I think they make there own boxes to be honest, a round box is simple/cheap to make as its just a big pice of tube. An oval box takes a bit more skill hence them not being able to do them.......

I had a "custom" exhaust made for my Alfa 155 once. That went back 7 times to try and get it right and a reasonable sound without it booming. one time it lost 50 bhp after they had put "butterflies" in it to quieten it down.

Never again would I get something that has not been on a flowbench and had some R&D into it. I remember when magnex used to ask the Peugeot Sport Club for cars for developing exhausts and they used to take ages to get the fit right and the sound right.

Good to see someone else thinks the same as me, I know when seeing a few the fit and quality was terrible, but they where cheap at the end of the day

Some stainless boxes I've seen are terrible from the likes of powerflow!

Had a BTB on my 182 and that was a work of art, think Cameron used to do work on them.

Yep, I did my work placement at BTB! I don't think I ever made Clio systems, but I'll happily take credit for it.

if they where decent boxes then even the round ones should be rolled, no more difficult to make an oval using a cnc sheet metal roller ;)

I used to work for the company that made magnex exhausts and this is how they did everything :)

If the OP can weld then chop it open with a grinder, fill it up and weld it shut again.

either that or chop the entire box off and buy another/a custom made jobbie and fit that

Pretty sure Des didn't have a CNC roller.

Making oval boxes with manual rollers is a bit of a skill, certainly more involved than making round ones.

I don't know who des is/what he does

anyway, point is boxes are easily replaced.

may even be worth getting a completely new, repackable silencer?

Des had a small garage with a ramp and a roll cab of tools.......
